Obviously the DOT is going to use AI in the worst way possible but the premise that gen AI cut timelines for rule-writing is reasonable. It's just that the actual judgment calls have to be done by humans.

The Department of Transportation plans to use Google's AI to draft new rules. DOT's top legal official told colleagues that the quality of the rules isn't so important: “We want good enough.” he said: “We're flooding the zone.” https://www.propublica.org/...

The DOT just confirmed what we long suspected - the govt is replacing skilled civil servants with unreliable AI tools to draft regulations impacting the health, safety, and rights of millions of Americans.  —  It's not just lazy, it's dangerous.  We'll continue shining light on t…

“The agency's rules include regulations that keep airplanes in the sky, prevent gas pipelines from exploding and stop freight trains carrying toxic chemicals from skidding off rails.  Why would the government outsource these critical standards to a nascent technology notorious fo…

This regime is so hellbent on dismantling competent governance that they're now outsourcing the rule of law to error-prone chatbots, treating public safety as just another word salad for their Silicon Valley toys.

NEW: The Transportation Department, which oversees the safety of airplanes, cars and pipelines, plans to use Google Gemini to draft new regulations.  —  “We don't need the perfect rule,” said DOT's top lawyer.  “We want good enough.”  —  By @jessecoburn.bsky.social

Federal rulemaking is an exacting process, and the stakes are high at DOT, whose regs stop pipelines from exploding and planes from falling out of the sky.  Major rules can take years to write+revise.  —  With Google Gemini, DOT's top lawyer now expects rules drafted in 20 minute…
