A deep dive into Apple's AI strategy reset, as it prepares to announce a Gemini-powered personalized Siri next month and a reimagined chatbot-like Siri at WWDC

Apple shakes up its AI efforts with a Google partnership, management changes and two new versions of Siri.

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple's earlier AI planning centered on a local-and-cloud LLM approach and a possible chatbot partnership. This reset makes Google a named part of the strategy while pairing platform work with organizational changes.

The two-track Siri plan also anticipates the product direction later described as Siri with personal context and on-screen awareness, moving the assistant beyond a single voice interface.

First-order effects

  • Apple reorganizes its AI effort and brings Google’s Gemini into the planned personalized Siri experience.
  • Siri is being split into two planned product tracks: a personalized assistant and a more chatbot-like interface, changing the scope of Apple’s AI rollout.

Second-order effects

  • Google gains a more central role in Apple’s consumer-AI roadmap, while Apple must make the Gemini-backed experience fit alongside its own Siri product direction.
  • A separate chatbot-style Siri raises the bar for how Apple differentiates an embedded, context-aware assistant from a standalone conversational interface.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple sustains this approach, major device platforms may increasingly combine proprietary interfaces and personal context with externally supplied frontier models rather than treating them as a single in-house stack.
  • The split between an ambient assistant and a chat surface could become a lasting product-design pattern, with the value shifting toward orchestration, context, and interface control.

The trend: Consumer AI is evolving toward hybrid assistant architectures that pair platform-owned context and interfaces with specialized external models.

Besides the iOS 26.4 Siri and iOS 27 chatbot Siri, Apple has been working on several other AI features including a revamped Safari to compete with OpenAI and Perplexity and several in-app chatbot experiences.  Those are both in flux. www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
