Ternus is now the “executive sponsor” of Apple's design team, representing the critical function on Apple's executive team. The move was under-the-radar: on paper, the teams report to Tim Cook despite Ternus's role.

Apple's design team has only ever been overseen by the very most prominent figures in Apple's history: Jony Ive until 2019, Cook himself briefly between 2015-2017 and former COO Jeff Williams from 2019-2025. Ternus now joins that list.

There are no signs Tim Cook is stepping down imminently but the company is clearly preparing for a post-Cook future. Aside from Ternus, the only other viable CEO candidate is COO Sabih Khan.
