Australian online design service Canva says it has 50M MAUs and has acquired Austrian visual AI startup Kaleido.ai and e-commerce startup Smartmockups

Bloomberg Yoolim Lee

Context & Ripple Effects

This is Canva's M&A engine switching on early. After two 2019 rounds capped by an $85M raise at a $3.2B valuation, the company sits at 50M MAUs and is buying rather than building in two directions at once: Austrian visual AI startup Kaleido.ai for image-manipulation capability, and e-commerce mockup tool Smartmockups for a seller-facing workflow.

Both bets aged well. Six weeks later Canva raised $71M at a $15B valuation; by 2024 it bought Affinity explicitly to take on Adobe, and by end-2025 reported 265M+ MAUs and $4B ARR. The Kaleido deal is the first visible step toward owning AI capability in-house rather than renting it.

First-order effects

  • Canva folds two standalone products into its canvas: Smartmockups gives e-commerce sellers product mockups without leaving Canva, while Kaleido.ai's visual AI moves image editing tasks that previously required separate tools onto Canva's platform.

Second-order effects

  • Adobe and other suite vendors now compete against a rival that acquires niche point solutions and bundles them into a free-tier funnel — a playbook Canva extended with its Affinity acquisition for professional-grade photo editing.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, acquired AI becomes owned AI: Kaleido-style capability feeding into Canva's own models, culminating in Canva AI 2.0 built on a proprietary design foundation model — with creators compensated for training data via Canva's $200M designer payout program.

The trend: Design platforms are consolidating visual-AI and e-commerce point tools through acquisition, converting distribution advantages into owned AI stacks that challenge incumbent suites.
