Twitter announces Super Follow feature to let users charge for tweets, and a Communities feature to let users create and join groups based on specific interests
The Verge Jacob Kastrenakes
Context & Ripple Effects
Twitter’s announcement paired paid creator access with interest-based groups, putting audience monetization and community formation on the same product roadmap. Contemporary coverage framed [[a:1160166|Super Follows as part of a wider push to let individuals capture economic value on social platforms]].
The rollout that followed was deliberately constrained: the iOS launch began with a select US test group and fixed monthly price points, before expanding to select creators globally on iOS. That sequence shows Twitter treating paid tweets as a staged creator product rather than a platform-wide default.
First-order effects
- Creators eligible for Super Follows gain a native way to charge recurring monthly fees for exclusive tweets, while followers must choose whether to pay for access.
- Twitter adds paid access and interest-based groups to a service previously centered on public posting and following.
Second-order effects
- Twitter’s limited iOS testing and later expansion make creator eligibility, payment processing, and mobile rollout central constraints on how quickly Super Follows can become a meaningful creator channel.
- Creators now have an incentive to organize audiences around both subscriber-only material and Communities, making group participation more commercially valuable to accounts that can attract paying followers.
Third-order effects
- If native subscriptions and Communities reinforce one another, social platforms’ competitive unit shifts from reach alone toward the ability to turn a defined audience into a recurring-revenue community.
- The staged rollout points to a platform model in which monetization features are introduced selectively, giving Twitter greater control over which creators receive commercial tools and under what mobile-payment terms.
The trend: Social networks are adding native subscription tools that let creators monetize concentrated communities rather than relying solely on broad public reach.

This is a bad idea. And in fact, I had a venture capitalist pitch me on a similar idea here in New Hampshire 3 years ago—a pilot program to let people pay to increase certain tweets' visibility—and I told him the same thing: this is a bad idea, and one I want nothing to do with. …

Whether reporters are allowed to enable Super Follows, and how they can use them, feels like it could cause a lot of controversy within newsrooms when it arrives. Could also raise conflict of interest concerns with reporters who, uh, cover Twitter 😬

The big question is if Twitter—and its payment provider—will allow adult content. Super Follow could kill OnlyFans overnight, but I suspect it will start Twitter down a path to banning adult content, just like Instagram, Patreon, and Tumblr. https://twitter.com/...
