Elon Musk says Tesla no longer accepts bitcoin for vehicle purchases due to its environmental cost, will look at more environmentally friendly cryptocurrencies

Tesla has stopped accepting bitcoin as payment for its cars out of concern that it will contribute to greater consumption of fossil fuels …

The Verge Sean O'Kane

Context & Ripple Effects

Tesla’s bitcoin-payment experiment followed its $1.5 billion bitcoin purchase and a March rollout allowing US customers to pay for vehicles with the cryptocurrency. Related coverage had already flagged the tension between bitcoin mining’s energy use and Tesla’s environmental positioning in its earlier bitcoin strategy.

The suspension converts that tension into a customer-facing policy reversal, while leaving Tesla to identify payment alternatives that meet its stated environmental standard.

First-order effects

  • Tesla buyers can no longer use bitcoin at checkout, and Tesla shifts its payment search toward cryptocurrencies it considers more environmentally friendly.
  • Tesla’s prior bitcoin-payment rollout is curtailed only weeks after launch, making environmental cost a stated condition for future crypto payments.

Second-order effects

  • The move reinforces crypto-market sensitivity to Tesla and Musk: related coverage recorded a sharp market selloff after the suspension tweet, affecting bitcoin alongside other major tokens.
  • Cryptocurrencies seeking use in merchant payments now face a more explicit environmental test from a prominent corporate adopter, rather than competing on payment functionality alone.

Third-order effects

  • If other companies follow Tesla’s distinction, corporate crypto strategies may separate treasury holdings from the tokens they will accept from customers.
  • Environmental scrutiny would become a practical gatekeeper for crypto-payment adoption, shaping which networks can be presented as suitable for consumer transactions.

The trend: Corporate crypto adoption is shifting from broad bitcoin acceptance toward environmental screening of payment tokens and a separation between holding crypto and accepting it at checkout.

@elonmusk Elon ... you realize that 75% of miners use renewable energy, right? This energy story has been debunked over and over again.

Tesla had a choice between traditional capital markets or bitcoin. And the bitcoin “market” has been horizontal for months and a hard correction is inevitable. Tesla doesn't care about the climate, they just care about money, so they made the economically rational choice. (13/)

Going to assume the Tesla thing is due to the idiotic logistics of actually accepting Bitcoin as payment for cars

Environmental concerns aren't new. What might be new is that Tesla realized that bc it can't book Bitcoin sales as profits — but rather as an intangible asset — this was blowing a hole in its balance sheet. https://twitter.com/...

Elon probably did not research how much energy is required to run other (non crypto) currencies that Tesla accepts. 😂 https://twitter.com/...

Miners primarily use renewable energy. Also, nobody is buying cars with #Bitcoin. https://twitter.com/...
