    Some people really think taking (fake) pictures of the moon is more important than 5-6 years of software support, a by far better build quality, and an overall better user experience. The Apple vs Samsung debate was never a thing, nor will it ever be.

    They're almost certainly doing deep learning based super resolution — which brings up an interesting question. It's not “enhancement” of the original, as the details are dreamed up by the model (in this case overfit to moon images). At what point does it become “replacement”? htt…

    They didn't lie about anything. Samsung never claimed moon pics were *optically* produced. No shit they're enhanced to get that detail. A phone sensor is too small. you could argue that AI/Ml training / sharpening is the same thing as slapping a moon-craters-texture.png over it

    How did they discover this? 1. They downloaded a high res image of the Moon 2. Downscaled it to a blurry 170x170px image on their computer monitor 3. Took a photo of it on the Samsung with the room lights out ...and they got a magically higher-res Moon! Clever.

    @MSBpest as you can see in the reddit test it is quite literally not ‘for real’, it's just substituting a moon texture. If the moon gains a crater tomorrow, it won't be there.
