Many Threads users report that the app now has a privacy option that lets them opt out of having their posts show up on Instagram and Facebook

The Verge Wes Davis

Context & Ripple Effects

Threads was launched with account ties that made profile deletion contingent on deleting Instagram, a constraint later eased through separate Threads profile deletion. The reported setting is another attempt to give users more control over how tightly the services are connected.

The product has also added a chronological following feed, signaling that user choice—not just cross-app distribution—is becoming a recurring part of Threads’ product development.

First-order effects

  • Users who see the setting can prevent their Threads posts from being surfaced on Instagram and Facebook, reducing their immediate cross-platform reach.
  • Meta’s distribution of Threads content on its larger apps becomes more dependent on user consent for accounts that opt out.

Second-order effects

  • Creators and businesses using Threads for reach may have to weigh broader Meta distribution against tighter audience separation.
  • The option reduces one source of unwanted content crossover, while making Threads’ own feed and discovery features relatively more important for opted-out posts.

Third-order effects

  • If Meta continues adding granular account, feed, and interaction controls, Threads may evolve from a tightly coupled Instagram extension into a more independently managed social product.
  • The pattern points to a broader trade-off in multi-app ecosystems: cross-network distribution can accelerate engagement, but durable use may require users to control the boundaries between services.

The trend: Threads is moving toward more granular user controls as Meta balances cross-app integration with users’ demand for account and audience separation.

Discussion

This has always been a real sticking point for me, and I'm glad Threads has given folks an opt-out.  (You might have to update your app to see this option in your settings.)
  • @datadrivenmd Jorge Caballero on threads
Indeed.  They started working on the option within days from what I could see in the code base
  • @michaelgreshko Michael Greshko on threads
I'm glad that Threads made this move.  People use different platforms to cultivate different audiences, even if there is continuity in the “brand.”  Giving people this option is extremely sensible.
  • @ipedro Pedro Marques on threads
Threads me and Facebook me are two very different people.  Mixing them together may have repercussions that disrupt the entire fabric of the space time continuum!  Glad we can now turn this off.
  • @brooksrocco @brooksrocco on threads
For those of us who don't need our weird step-uncles seeing our unhinged Threads, our time is now.
  • @jbillinson Josh Billinson on threads
Now I just need them to let me hide all suggested Threads from my Instagram feed
  • @kiriappeee Adnan Issadeen on threads
Important update for a lot of people.  Folks out here are far more vulnerable (or unhinged) given the open community nature of a network like this.  This is an important privacy update.
  • @dryllyrd @dryllyrd on threads
They shipped this option pretty quickly after the initial uproar.  People can't say the Threads team isn't responsive.

Threads - Go check your privacy settings, suggesting posts. This will allow you to toggle on or off the option to suggest your posts on Instagram and Facebook. [image]
