ISD: fake footage of Iran's attack on Israel went viral on X, including AI-made videos and photos, with many posts from verified accounts and “OSINT experts”

Wired Vittoria Elliott

Discussion

  • @laurengoode Lauren Goode on threads
Just 34 misleading posts received over 37 million views.  A lot of the accounts posting the misinformation were also verified, so they've paid Twitter/X $8 per month for the ‘blue tick’ *and* their posts are amplified by the platform's algorithm https://www.wired.com/... via @tel…

@Osint613 The video is from February and filmed in Syria https://twitter.com/...

The US does not have military bases in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Turkmenistan, Jake. [image]

Seeing this video being shared widely today as a failed Iranian drone found in Iraq this morning. It's an old video from Syria and unrelated to the retaliatory attack by Iran against Israel last night.

@vcdgf555 I cannot deal with the volume of BS by “osint accounts” on this platform atm. Just a load of rubbish being posted for engagement

This video falsely claims to show people in Israel taking cover upon the “arrival of the first batch of Iranian drones” tonight. It's in fact old footage that has been online since at least July 2023. It's unrelated to tonight's attack, via @ArsenKeklikoglu. [image]

Correction: The video is even older than that, and it's from Chile, not Texas. Accordong to @cazamosfakenews, the clip shows fire “in Achupallas (Viña del Mar) in Chile and has been circulating on social networks since February”. https://twitter.com/...

Video game footage is once again going viral online via users seeking engagement during a breaking news event. This is not footage of Israel's Iron Dome in action against an Iranian retaliatory attack, it's from the video game Arma 3. [image]

A video broadcast by Iran's state TV tonight claiming to show the impact of Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel “minutes ago” is old. In fact, it shows fire in Texas and was published in March. [image]

Seeing plenty of old videos from the Middle East plus some video game footage going viral tonight, mostly posted by accounts seeking clout and engagement during a major news event by spreading misinformation and fear. Double-check everything you see online tonight.

This video falsely claims to show the impact of Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel. In fact, the video shows Ukrainian missiles target Russian ships in Sevastopol on 23 March. [image]

This video, viewed nearly 400,000 times, falsely claims to show Palestinians at Al-Aqsa mosque celebrate Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel tonight. The video is from last week, and shows Palestinians praying at Al-Aqsa on the last Friday of Ramadan. [image]

NOT a video from Tel Aviv airport tonight. This is Paris Metro, 2019 @Shayan86 @talhagin @alexcapron @DavidPuente [image]

We examined real and fake clips of Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel. We synched 3 different unverified videos purporting to show missiles hitting an Israeli air base. They all clearly show the same event. W/ @benedictgarman @Shayan86 @SarahGlatte https://www.bbc.com/...

We need a snappy description for all those terrible “OSINT” accounts that do awful analysis or just repost things they've found on Telegram. OSHIT?

This video, posted by Jackson Hinkle and others and viewed nearly 5 million times, claims to show “Israelis panicking” as Iran's missiles and drones reach Israel. in fact, it shows Louis Tomlinson fans near Four Seasons Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina last week; verified by... […

This video, viewed nearly 700,000 times, falsely claims to show the launch of Iranian missiles against Israel last night. But the video is from 2020, and shows rockets fired by the Turkish military in Syria. [image]

There's going to be a lot of nonsense posted over the next few hours if not days. Follow this account. He's with the BBC and this is what he does - debunks nonsense. Please be careful about retweeting stories. They might be fake.

This video, widely shared last night, falsely claims to show an Israeli settlement struck by Iranian missiles. The video dates back to the Israel-Hamas war in May 2021, showing a Hamas rocket destory a house in Rishon LeZion. [image]

Whoever provided you with video confirmation should be fired because this footage is from October 2023. [image]
