Logitech unveils the MX Ink, a $130 stylus coming in September for the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and “future headsets”, the Quest's first third-party input device

CNET Scott Stein

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta’s Quest line had been evolving its mixed-reality hardware, including the Quest 3’s color mixed-reality positioning and later higher-resolution, higher-performance design. Logitech’s MX Ink is the first reported third-party input device for that installed base.

The accessory also explicitly covers “future headsets,” making it more than a one-model add-on: it is an early signal that Quest can accommodate specialist peripherals alongside Meta’s own controllers.

First-order effects

  • Logitech gains a $130 Quest accessory category, while Quest 2 and Quest 3 owners get a third-party stylus option when it ships in September.
  • Meta’s headset platform moves beyond an input model defined solely by its own bundled controllers; the MX Ink is positioned for current devices and future Quest hardware.

Second-order effects

  • Other peripheral makers have a clearer precedent to evaluate Quest-specific accessories, especially where a dedicated tool can offer more precise or task-specific input than standard controllers.
  • Meta can use third-party accessories to broaden the practical roles of Quest hardware without having to bundle every specialized input device with a headset.

Third-order effects

  • If additional peripherals follow, mixed-reality competition may increasingly hinge on the breadth and quality of an accessory ecosystem, not only headset specifications and bundled controllers.
  • The pattern points toward workflow-native monetization: headset platforms can support more specialized use cases through optional hardware, though one stylus alone does not establish the scale of that market.

The trend: Mixed-reality platforms are beginning to open their input layers to specialist accessories that can turn general-purpose headsets into more task-specific devices.

After all the speculation about Apple doing this with Vision Pro, Meta will do it first with Quest via Logitech.  The first officially supported third-party tracked controller for an Oculus or Meta headset.

This is why I like open ecosystems. Can't wait to try this out.

Was awesome to work with @Logitech to get this into Substance Modeller. It is a really nice device and well suited to creation in VR. Worth it if you make stuff in VR and want that fine control in a familiar form factor.

Someone finally figured it out! A pressure sensitive pen you can use in VR/AR 🤘 This is potentially going to be amazing for 3D Modeling

Logitech's MXInk looks really great. I'll definitely be picking one up when it comes out Unironically it might be the most interesting thing happening in Quest hardware/software for me at the moment

Quest Pro's controllers could be flipped around and used as a stylus, but app support wasn't really there (rip horizon workrooms whiteboard). price is right for the MX Ink and hope apps that support it also pass along that integration to Touch Pro controllers

As we await the Vision Pro's connection with the Apple Pencil Pro, Meta and Logitech's MX Ink teases an exciting future. I can't wait to get my hands on one and experience it firsthand! ✍️

Meta Quest has a stylus now: Logitech's MX Ink coming this fall. This is the Apple Pencil of the future I wanted https://www.cnet.com/...

Finally, a 6DOF pen for VR creators! Modeler will be supporting this when it is available. You can hold it like a pen or in “sculpting grip” as well.

Official video Logitech MX Ink for Meta Quest I've been wanting one of these for awhile now. There are great painting apps but the controllers have never felt good to use for these apps. Using a pen, on a super-imposed image on a real life table seems like a fun use here [video]

Wow, a pen compatible with the Quest! I can imagine many use cases... Logitech launches MX Ink stylus for Meta Quest mixed reality headsets https://venturebeat.com/... via @VentureBeat #VirtualReality #VR

Logitech MX Ink looks to be a new stylus accessory for the Quest line of VR devices. Apparently it connects as a 3rd controller allowing you to seamlessly switch back and forth. Wouldn't it be funny if this launches before Apple Pencil support for AVP 😅 [image]
