Sources: Apple was caught flat-footed by the generative AI fever and is on course to spend ~$1B/year to add the tech across iOS 18, Siri, Music, and other apps
But the company is now preparing its response and plans to develop features for its full range of devices.

We should be clear on what the problem is before saying gen AI is the solution. They need better NLP. Yes, that's an ML model. No, it's not a sentence transformer.

NEW: Apple is planning to launch new iPads around March, with new entry-level, Air, Mini and Pro models in development. This gap explains why Apple didn't wait to release the new low-end Apple Pencil. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

i don't buy that Apple is scrambling to adopt AI or that it's considered a “pretty big miss” internally. Apple has never been like that... to burn cash and jump on a trend just because. if they see value in the technology, they'll work to adopt it at their own pace.

This makes the Pencil announcement last week seem even weirder. But I guess it would've been completely drowned out by new Macs. https://www.theverge.com/...

I can't see them doing new laptops already that's just nuts. I also can't see them doing M3 this early ahead of Vision Pro. But hey who knows!

I wonder whether Apple had planned to delay the M3 Mac rollout to save capacity for the iPhone 15, and has now been inspired to move it back up due to some combination of better-than-expected yields and lower-than-expected sales? https://www.macrumors.com/...

It would have been a very odd thing for Apple not to launch something other than iPhones and Watches at the end of the year this year. Hopefully we finally see the iMac updated and more.

M2 iMac? Seems like they should just hold off for M3 at this point...but then again they could launch M3 in this iMac assuming they don't mind a press-release announcement.

My bet is on new iMacs - #1 reason is so Apple can kill off all the Mac lighting accessories before the end of the year and switch over to a new USB-C Magic Mouse, keyboard, and trackpad.

The high-end configurations of the MacBook Pro and several configs and colors of the iMac are sold out/seeing massive shipment delays at Apple, Amazon, Best Buy and elsewhere heading into the holidays. Last time Apple earnings were in November was after an Oct 30 launch event.
