Nothing plans to roll out an early version of Nothing Chats, a Sunbird-based app that lets Phone (2) users send iMessages to iPhone contacts, on November 17

Nothing, Sunbird and other upstarts are taking iMessage where it's never been before  —  Here's a glimmer of hope for anyone …

dude who previously led a company that did the “smash your phone to get our new phone” campaign, now doing the “gimme your Apple ID credentials for iMessage on our Android phone” at his new company totally not a stunt

you're in their DMs, we're in their iMessages.

it's not a new phenomenon — when I was a kid if you didn't have a cool brand of shoes you would be made fun of endlessly, regardless of what your family's economic situation was. but it is still awful and i feel bad for this 11 year old kid whose getting made fun of or ostracized…

my oldest child (who doesn't yet have a phone of their own, but has an Apple Watch with Family Setup) told me the other day that there's one kid in their friend group who has an Android phone and the other kids make fun of them for it. it broke my heart, because it's such a stupi…

I love that Google's solution is to get the EU to force Apple to open up iMessage so Android green bubbles can become blue ones and hide people's shame.  😄
  • @chrispirillo Chris Pirillo on threads
Without revealing too much, I've seen at least *two* examples recently of people who were adamant about not connecting with “Android users.”  No love lost.  That's a level of petty (childish) bullshit.

Nothing Chat uses Sunbird's architecture, so you have to trust them with access to your iCloud account.  (IIRC, they basically just relay iMessage from a Mac mini farm somewhere, which is why it needs your iCloud account.)  I've never bothered setting up Sunbird or Beeper (just h…

I do not think the solution to iMessage woes is to force Apple to open the protocol or to support RCS.  It's to get Apple to make an iMessage app for Android.  If they're gonna be forced to do anything, it should be that.
  • @mishaal_rahman Mishaal Rahman on threads
Messaging apps that are locked to specific devices are cringe.  Mr. Cook, tear down this wall!  In all seriousness, it's interesting to see solutions like Nothing Chat gain traction, because I wonder how Apple will respond. …
  • @saltrif Sal Trifilio on threads
My take is Nothing wants Apple to quickly ship an OTA update that renders Nothing's iMessage “solution” impossible, resulting in Nothing claiming Apple is using anticompetitive practices for a market advantage that ultimately hurts consumers.  I think Google's lawsuit is the main…

According to @mkbhd Nothing's iMessage compatible chat app also requires you to sign into your Apple ID on a remote Mac that you do not have physical access to.  In other words, it's potentially incredibly unsecure.  Just as bad as Beeper in that regard. https://www.youtube.com/.…

Bring on the blue bubbles. We believe in windows, not walls. If messaging services are dividing phone users, then we want to break those barriers down. So... we've developed iMessage compatibility for your Phone (2). [video]

@panzer “Every single user has a dedicated Mac mini in a data center” seems like a pretty terrible solution for scaling
  • @captain2phones Michael Fisher on x
I really admire @nothing 's boldness in “porting” iMessage to its Android phone ... but I can't shake the feeling that I've seen this story before: [Screenshots of the articles from 2009: Ars Technica “iTunes on the Mac plays nice with Palm Pre—for now (Updated)” TechDirt “Apple …

Oh my 👀 Apple is probably 😤

I don't care what the benefits are, giving a third party your Apple ID password is stupid. Don't do it.
  • @om @om on x
So the “blue bubble” is like the “white headphones” or “airpods” that everyone needs to imitate to be i-like! So much for creating their own “blue bubble” of coolness that others would want to copy.

@MKBHD Singing into your Apple ID still concerns me. Used beeper for a bit and it just shows a random Mac mini in a warehouse signed into my Apple ID in iCloud
  • @theryanprhodes Ryan on x
I cannot stress enough how terrible of an idea it is to give a third party your AppleID and password for the sake of iMessage. 🚩 your AppleID is connected across your life—banking, social media, email, school, smart home, and much much more.

My issues with this: 1. Security is the biggest concern here. I wonder how many people will trust their core messaging app with such a security flaw. 2. Also why do android companies have to find a work around & please the iPhone users? Why don't they try to create their own...
  • @camcovington Cameron Covington on x
The security risks of handing over your AppleID to a random company who SAYS they won't do anything with it are overwhelming. Yikes.
  • @mkbhd Marques Brownlee on x
Today Nothing did something truly wild, and game me an exclusive look at it. So for this video I break down what it is (an app) what it does (iMessage for Android) and what Apple might do when they see this 👀 [video]

Let's end the green bubble stigma! @tim_cook please consider adopting RCS for security and interoperability 🙏
  • @jonesyoutubejt Jt Jones on x
Carl Pei says “There is no data saved on the platform it's all local on your device, so new users do not have to worry about their privacy ” MKBHD says he confirmed with Nothing that it's literally signing in on some Mac mini in a server farm somewhere & that mac mini will.....

Really excited to try this out. Cuz since the iPhone got usb-c, I've relied much less on airdrop, leaving iMessage the only true wall left to take down. What are your thoughts on this. Is iMessage on android enough to make you switch? 🤔
