NEW: Apple nears production of first M4 chips with AI upgrades and plans to bring the new chips to all of its Macs, including new MacBook Pros and Airs, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, Mac mini and iMac across the end of this year and 2025. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

What if Meta hits us with a GPT-4 capable Llama 3 running on your own hardware? It would be a total game changer regardless of how great GPT-5 is.

@markgurman I hear that perspective - but let me share that i feel that if we did that, if we built something that was just a companion device. It would have been short sighted. We would have been limiting what is possible and creating something that is not future proofed at all.…

@octal The current Apple M chips are accidentally excellent with memory bandwidth. 150 gigabytes/sec is slow compared to a graphics card with 1000 gigabytes/sec, but faster than the 50 gigabytes/sec of the average desktop and 25 gigabytes/sec of the average notebook.

Ugh, I guess I'll be replacing my 16" M1 Max 64/8000 from Dec 2021 on the 3 year mark with an M4 Mac. https://www.macrumors.com/...

@octal I suspect their biggest change will be memory bandwidth, such as doubling to 300 gigabytes/second. right now for AI, they are memory bandwidth limited rather than compute limited. It'd be slower than a nVidia GPU, but with more RAM, so a lot cheaper for some tasks.

Wow, might be worth waiting for the M4 then: https://macrumors.com/2024/04/11/m4- ai-chips-late-2024/ “M4 versions of the Mac desktops could support as much as 512GB Unified Memory, which would be a marked jump over the current 192GB limit.”  [Replies to his X post from yesterday…

I'm glad to see the more consistent YoY upgrade cycle for Macs, makes it easier for people to decide when they should buy a new machine. The next step would be to have a default month/timeframe for each Mac, much like we know we'll get new iPhones every September.

@AIandDesign We did some testing on local Llama on a Mac and ram seems to be a big differentiator. I wouldn't try it with less than 16GB and ideally 32GB regardless of the M-series chip.

Is this the evidence we needed for an M4 Extreme chip, exclusively for the Mac Pro? Mark says Mac Pro will be coming later in 2025 AFTER the Mac Studio. Also, it'll have up to 512GB of memory which will only be possible on M4 Extreme. (probs 2x M4 Ultra dies with UltraFusion)

AI based features that require new hardware seem like a potential huge upgrade incentive for new Apple products. I'm fine with my M1 MBP, but I'll bet these chips will enable some really crazy stuff.

The Apple “highlight AI” “AI-focused” M4 chips AI narrative today is perplexing. 🤷‍♂️ M3 chips already have decent GPU that can do AI workloads, along with the helpful unified memory structure to run larger models.

it sounds like Apple is getting ready to refresh its entire lineup of Macs with M4 processors later this year. The updates will come months after new Windows on ARM devices hit the market and could outperform Apple's M3 CPU https://www.theverge.com/...
