Sources: Meta has held discussions with Apple to integrate its AI model with Apple Intelligence; Anthropic and Perplexity also discussed integrations with Apple

The longtime rivals have held talks about potentially integrating Meta's generative AI model into Apple Intelligence

Wall Street Journal

Context & Ripple Effects

The reported talks place Meta alongside Anthropic and Perplexity as potential external-model providers for Apple Intelligence, showing Apple was evaluating multiple paths rather than tying the product to a single partner. Subsequent coverage said Apple rejected Meta's Llama proposal over privacy concerns, underscoring that model capability was not the only selection criterion.

The episode also foreshadows Apple's later reported interest in a partnership or bid involving Perplexity, keeping external AI technology and talent central to its options.

First-order effects

  • Meta, Anthropic and Perplexity gain visibility as prospective suppliers of generative-AI capabilities within Apple Intelligence, although the discussions do not establish an integration.
  • Apple can assess outside models against its own product, privacy and platform requirements while retaining control of the Apple Intelligence distribution layer.

Second-order effects

  • Prospective model suppliers face pressure to meet Apple's privacy and integration standards; reported rejection of Meta's proposal shows access to iPhone distribution is conditional, not automatic.
  • Multiple potential providers improve Apple's negotiating leverage and make partner selection a competitive route to consumer AI reach, rather than a purely standalone-model contest.

Third-order effects

  • If platform owners increasingly mix proprietary and third-party models, consumer AI may consolidate around a few device and operating-system distribution gates while model developers compete to be selectable suppliers.
  • Privacy, data-handling and product-control requirements could become as decisive as model quality in partnership markets, though this report alone does not show which arrangement Apple will ultimately choose.

The trend: Consumer AI platforms are becoming model marketplaces in which distribution owners screen multiple suppliers while preserving control over user experience and data rules.

If Apple Intelligence partners with Meta, this will only legitimize them and incentivize them to build more AI products.  But does the world need more AI products?  Apple partnering with Anthropic or Google Gemini makes sense.  But are the uses of generative AI even remotely usef…

@Techmeme It's not being integrated into Apple Intelligence. It would be an API hook for third-party AI models. Should correct this headline.

One irony of the DMA serving as a hurdle to Apple Intelligence being introduced in the EU is that Apple seems exceedingly amenable to integrating rival firms' AI models into its operating systems. [image]

WOW I can't even believe it WSJ reporting that $META and $AAPL discussed integration of $META 's GenAI model into Apple Intelligence. Shocking on so many levels since $AAPL hates $META. Good for both.
