Anthropic adds safeguards to prevent third-party apps, like OpenCode, from spoofing Claude Code to access Claude models for more favorable pricing and limits

Anthropic has confirmed the implementation of strict new technical safeguards preventing third-party applications from spoofing …

Yesterday we tightened our safeguards against spoofing the Claude Code harness after accounts were banned for triggering abuse filters from third-party harnesses using Claude subscriptions.

I love the models Anthropic are offering, but I seriously hope it's a mistake that they're blocking alternative harness providers, like @opencode, from working with their subscriptions. Seems very customer hostile. https://github.com/...
  • @banteg @banteg on x
anthropic crackdown on people abusing the subscription auth is the gentlest it could've been. just a polite message instead of nuking your account or retroactively charging you at api prices.

“Given how Anthropic's API actually works, the underlying unit economics are very dependent on how effective cache utilization is or how the agent, the harness actually drives the loop” - I think Armin may be right about this
  • @jessethanley @jessethanley on x
The biggest L in the whole @anthropic vs. @opencode situation is that they've just radicalised the entire @anomalyco team and the supporting OSS community. They're going to expedite an equivalent product, @OpenCode Black, we will all switch and when new models from other

There are a few thoughts that I have on this: 1. I think we all need to recognize that Anthropic is the only large model provider in the US that actually had such generous, key, unrestricted use. For instance, Codex is effectively unusable outside the original harness. The

Its totally fair for Anthropic to limit the claude code subscription to work only in claude code... If you want the massive token discount you gotta use their tools. API exists for a reason.

I took Thariq up on the offer to DM him. Thought I'd also publicly share what I wrote. It would be lovely if such an arrangement was available. [image]

I think a lot of y'all don't understand the point of the $200/month Claude Code plan. It isn't an attempt to make a profit. It's a marketing expense. Those plans LOSE money. Sure, 80% of users will do less than $200 of inference. The top ones will go WAY over. It's easy to do

we are working with openai to allow codex users to benefit from their subscription directly within OpenCode

@dhh ... “when you feel like it” No, a terms violation? Do you think we shouldn't enforce our terms? If anyone wants to use Claude models, they simply use the API. The one thing we should've done better here is tell end users sooner, as they might not have known. https://x.com/..…

i have fully dropped Claude Code for OpenCode i donʼt use Opus 4.5, i use GLM-4.7 and MiniMax-M2.1 theyʼre opensource and can be self-hosted nobody can nerf my models or rug pull me nobody should be able to do that to your intelligence p.s. buy a GPU and run your LLMs locally

We are working with OpenCode to allow Codex users to use their Codex subscriptions and usage limits in OpenCode directly. Also exploring how to support other awesome actors in the space.
  • @thsottiaux Tibo on x
With the Claude Code shutdown. I am proud that we build Codex in the open with our OSS repo and we are 100% invested in supporting a flourishing ecosystem of agentic coding tools out there. You can already build on top of https://github.com/... directly, which includes ChatGPT

I think it's great that all the model providers are coming out with their own CLIs, but let's be honest, no dev is going to want to have five different CLIs installed. They're going to want to learn and use one tool with all the models. For me, that tool is OpenCode.
  • @astuyve AJ Stuyvenberg on x
I'm floored Anthropic aggressively cut off paying customers from using Claude Max subscriptions with open source agents. They're speedrunning the journey from forgivable startup to loathsome corporation before any exit! @_catwu - I'd strongly urge you to reconsider this. [image]
  • @maxedapps Maximilian on x
Can Claude Code just buy @opencode ? Opencode is so much better but I need that access to Claude Code Max :D
  • @dimillian Thomas Ricouard on x
Surely someone at Anthropic must have realized than shutting down Clawdbot access was bad press.
  • @thdxr Dax on x
    1. there is no code in the main opencode repo that does anything with anthropic auth 2. we support auth plugins to enable other providers, people have implemented many of them 3. someone already figured out a workaround for the latest block and got it working

To shut off access to your model to anyone, not even directly but via an intermediary, shows that they have to be monitoring the usage and things are reaching the knife-fight stage between the labs.

  • @trq212 @trq212 on x
Third-party harnesses using Claude subscriptions create problems for users and are prohibited by our Terms of Service. They generate unusual traffic patterns without any of the usual telemetry that the Claude Code harness provides, making it really hard for us to help debug when
  • @trq212 @trq212 on x
This is why the supported way to use Claude in your own tools is via the API. We genuinely want people building on Claude, including other coding agents and harnesses, and we know developers have broad preferences for different tool ergonomics. If you're a maintainer of a

Confirmation that Anthropic is intentionally blocking OpenCode, and any other 3P harness, in a paranoid attempt to force devs into Claude Code. Terrible policy for a company built on training models on our code, our writing, our everything. Please change the terms, @DarioAmodei.
  • @yuchenj_uw Yuchen Jin on x
Anthropic blocked Claude subs in third-party apps like OpenCode, and reportedly cut off xAI and OpenAI access. Claude and Claude Code are great, but not 10x better yet. This will only push other labs to move faster on their coding models/agents. DeepSeek V4 is rumored to drop

Scoop: xAI staff had been using Anthropic's models internally through Cursor—until Anthropic cut off the startup's access this week. Here's what xAI cofounder Tony Wu sent to staff on Wednesday according to a copy of the internal Slack message I viewed: “Hi

Anthropic cut off access to Xai employees on cursor, yet the Tesla team prefers grok but the Xai team prefers Claude 4.5 Opus. Fascinating as I thought winning “wasn't in the cards for anthropic” [image]
  • @edzitron Ed Zitron on x
This is *wild* - this isn't xAI using Anthropic directly, but a product that uses Anthropic's models. It directly hurts Cursor (one of Anthropic's largest API customers) and also shows that any customer who competes with Anthropic will face the same.
