Crunchbase

57 articles accelerating

Crunchbase’s coverage has shifted from startup fundraising and deal-reference data to AI-driven forecasts and recurring measures of the VC market’s uneven recovery.

Who they are

Crunchbase appears in coverage as a private-company and venture-market intelligence platform: reporters and outlets use its data to establish startup funding histories in acquisition and financing stories, while Crunchbase News publishes broader analyses of funding, exits, valuations and sector activity. The company has also positioned its product beyond company lookup, relaunching with AI tools intended to predict funding rounds, acquisitions and IPOs from 17 years of startup data.

The recent arc

Recent coverage is dominated by Crunchbase as a market-data publisher rather than as the subject of corporate fundraising. In 2025 and 2026, its reporting tracked global VC funding, fintech investment, European funding, autonomous-vehicle financing and the return of large exits. Its June 2026 report counted 13 US venture-backed exits worth at least $1 billion in Q2, the highest level since the 2021 peak; April reports paired a nearly 30% year-over-year rise in European VC funding with a 40% drop in deal volume and recorded $21.4 billion raised by autonomous-vehicle startups through mid-April.

The coverage also increasingly frames AI as the market’s organizing force. A TechCrunch analysis using Crunchbase and PitchBook data found more than 80 tech startups had crossed $1 billion valuations in 2025, while Forbes cited Crunchbase data showing more than $200 billion invested in AI startups that year. This follows an earlier phase in which Crunchbase was frequently cited for funding totals in transactions involving companies such as DataStax, Deliv, Laserlike and Twine Health, and a company-focused phase marked by its Series C from OMERS Ventures and earlier Enterprise expansion.

The tension

The recurring tension is between signs of venture recovery and a market concentrated in a narrow set of categories and large outcomes. Crunchbase’s own recent figures show stronger funding in fintech, Europe and autonomous vehicles, but also declining European deal volume and AI taking more than half of European funding; its data is also used alongside PitchBook’s to document AI-heavy billion-dollar valuations. That makes Crunchbase both a scorekeeper of the recovery and a vendor trying to turn the same historical market record into predictive intelligence.

Why it matters

If this trajectory holds, Crunchbase’s importance will rest less on supplying a retrospective funding number for a deal and more on helping investors, operators and journalists interpret which parts of private markets are attracting capital, producing exits and becoming overconcentrated. The usefulness of its predictive push will depend on whether historic data can remain informative amid an AI-led funding cycle whose deal counts, valuations and exit conditions are moving unevenly.

Crunchbase has appeared in 57 articles since 2017-04. Coverage peaked in 2026Q2 with 3 articles. Frequently mentioned alongside TechCrunch, Deliv, Ingrid Lunden, OMERS Ventures.
