Sources: Craig Federighi and other Apple executives voiced concerns that personalized Siri didn't work properly; some think it has to be rebuilt from scratch

Apple Inc.'s turmoil in its AI division reached new heights on Friday, with the company delaying promised updates to the Siri digital assistant for the foreseeable future.

I have never and will never call for someone to be fired, but this report clearly implies leadership changes are imminent.  —  The Apple employees talking to Bloomberg over the past year are setting Giannandrea up as the fall guy.  [embedded post]

This whole Apple Intelligence rollout has been messy from the start.  What's remarkable is how terrible Siri has been since it was first introduced over a decade ago.  [embedded post]

Delayed or not, Apple's proposed Intents-based Apple Intelligence features require a ton of buy-in from developers for it to be of any real use, and the incentives really aren't there — donating your app's content and functionality to enrich Apple's AI alone, bypassing your UI, U…

It's disappointing to see Apple so behind in this space, but I rather a stellar implementation than an undercooked product.  Apple should take the time to refine AI to have it become a unique “as only Apple can do” service that's exclusive to it's ecosystem.

This is both incredibly absurd, and the right thing to do.  If this is released and not impeccably good, Siri is cooked for GOOD!  This better be a day one, tentpole iOS 19 feature that blows people away.  They have 6 months.  Apple

Good god.  After Federighi said the features weren't working as intended, members of the AI division said that they might have to be scrapped entirely and rebuilt from scratch.  —  Yikes.  Yikes!  Holy, yikes.  The incompetence is astounding.  —  RE: https://www.threads.net/...

The difference between how App Intents work in Shortcuts versus Siri has always been stark. The App Shortcuts Preview feature for testing phrases just doesn't work at all. Which has kept me skeptical about sprinkling LLM “magic” on top of this and it just working.

@markgurman Doesn't really help that their head of AI's speciality is ML and knowledge graphs, and was fundamentally opposed to the concept of General Pre-trained Transformers when he ran Google Search, and left Google/ joined Apple over it

John Ternus fixed hardware at Apple. We need somebody to take Craig's place that will fix software.

@sdw It's not Siri. It's Apple's current software department. iOS has been terribly buggy for 3 generations now, Apple Intelligence way over promised and now this. THIS is the issue. Not Siri.

Kinda crazy how much Apple Intelligence is promoted when it doesn't do 90% of what was advertised [image]

Internal politics will always trend against a clean-slate rebuild ... but Apple is perfectly positioned to use its massive cash pile for one of the 9001 different sub-$10B AI labs. Grok caught up in a year! This is doable!

Maybe Apple just needs to fix Xcode, clearly it's holding back their software dev teams.

@markgurman I got the 16 Pro Max with the promise of the new Siri AI. I've been an Apple fan for years, and this is the most disappointing thing I've ever experienced. So much was promised, and it's not coming to fruition as soon as we thought it would. Sad times indeed.

@appltrack Apple HAS to get their goddamn shit together. Something is EXTREMELY off in their software department. This is simply ruining Apples entire reputation Just wtf is going on there internally...

I can't believe @Apple has missed AI so badly and Siri is still so awful. Seems like @tim_cook needs to find a new head of AI Strategy. JG has been there for 7 years. Clearly not executing well. via @daringfireball [image]

The failure to get the AI Siri out on time not only impacts current device users and the company's dwindling reputation in AI, but hurts its ability to launch an entirely new hardware product: its smart home hub. Welcome to Apple's AI crisis. https://www.bloomberg.com/...
