Mastodon, nostr, and other decentralized social networks are having a moment, despite some complexity, propelled by the apparent decline of Twitter and Meta
So, it's been quite a year for legacy, centralized social media — and all without any really big change to the laws that govern it … Mastodon: @kkomaitis@techpolicy.social . I think there's also some lesson in what constitutes “notability” (see also “may or may not be notable” on Twitter) when I have more mastodon followers than pretty much any of these folks, as best I can tell. …
The explosion in growth for Mastodon, including among mainstream, non-tech users, is genuinely exciting. That an open-source, interoperable, nonprofit-driven protocol could reach this kind of success is incredible. …
I got a post news account and the interface is slick, but the content mostly seems to be full of Americans who are angry at Trump. I hate the buffoon as much as anybody, but I was kind of hoping the future of social media wouldn't be centered around Trump.
I wrote about how I cannot understand why anyone is interested in joining a new centralized social media platform when we now have a great opportunity to move to protocols instead of platforms. https://www.techdirt.com/...

Nice piece here on the importance of Twitter to science. I've lost count of how many collaborations I've started via Twitter. It's very important to me. https://twitter.com/...
The fracturing of the scientific community on Twitter is a disaster, akin to the burning of the Library of Alexandria. For the first time in history, you had real-time conversations between scientists across thousands of specialties. Now its fading away: https://www.nature.com/..…
