Twitter disables Spaces, after Elon Musk abruptly left a group conversation with suspended journalists; Musk says Twitter is fixing a “legacy bug”

Twitter has apparently pulled its Spaces group audio feature, at least temporarily, after Elon Musk joined a group conversation …

TechCrunch Paul Sawers

Context & Ripple Effects

Spaces had already lost its Ticketed Spaces experiment before Musk’s takeover, limiting its role as a direct creator-revenue product. The service’s abrupt withdrawal follows Musk’s short appearance in a journalist-hosted Space about the suspensions, turning a public moderation dispute into a product-availability issue.

Later coverage of the reduction of the Spaces team to roughly three people places the interruption in a broader retreat from investment in the audio product rather than an isolated feature incident.

First-order effects

  • Spaces hosts and listeners immediately lose access to Twitter’s group-audio venue while the feature is disabled.
  • Twitter must handle the fallout from taking down a live communications product after Musk’s exchange with suspended journalists, while attributing the move to a legacy bug.

Second-order effects

  • Creators and communities that used Spaces face greater uncertainty around a product whose paid Ticketed Spaces test had already been shut down indefinitely.
  • The disruption weakens Spaces’ reliability as a venue for live discussion of Twitter’s own moderation decisions, especially for journalists and other users affected by suspensions.

Third-order effects

  • The later contraction of the Spaces organization suggests Twitter’s audio product is moving from a standalone growth effort toward a lightly maintained feature, if the reported staffing pattern persists.
  • Twitter’s handling of product access during contentious moderation episodes points toward a platform where operational decisions and governance disputes are increasingly intertwined.

The trend: Twitter is shifting from expanding creator-facing formats to selectively maintaining them amid Musk-era changes to moderation and product priorities.

And yes, of course, Musk was in the middle of this. Spaces was shut down for all Twitter users after Musk was in a Twitter Spaces about the banned journalists, and one of the these banned journalists asked a question from Musk. This was the answer. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

I've been kicked off a lot of platforms: Friendster, MySpace (a few times), FourSquare, Tinder, and been suspended here at least twice in the past. But it still brings me a smile to have completely destroyed the entire Spaces functionality

Twitter spaces is down because they are fixing a ‘legacy bug’. I am pretty sure that the legacy bug is allowing suspended accounts to join a space. As you can see below, the suspended journalists including ‘elonjet’, were all part of the space that Musk participated in 😅 https://…
