SpaceX gets FCC approval to deploy up to 7,500 next-generation Starlink internet satellites in low Earth orbit; SpaceX had applied for nearly 30K satellites

This approval is the latest step in a long negotiation over how big Starlink gets. The FCC first licensed the original 4,425-satellite network in 2018 with a deployment-milestone requirement, then added permission for over 7,000 more that November, bringing the approved plan to roughly 12,000 satellites.

SpaceX pushed for far more, filing paperwork in 2019 for 30,000 additional low-Earth-orbit satellites. Today's decision grants only a slice of that ask — up to 7,500 next-generation satellites — leaving the bulk of the application undecided, and the FCC has since followed the same tranche-by-tranche pattern, later clearing another 7,500 Gen2 satellites for a 15,000-satellite worldwide total.

  • The FCC's decision to approve in tranches rather than grant the full request makes incremental regulatory sign-off a recurring dependency on Starlink's growth path, and sets the licensing template every rival LEO broadband applicant will be measured against.

  • If the tranche pattern holds, mega-constellation size becomes an actively managed regulatory variable — the effective ceiling on any operator's network set by successive FCC decisions rather than by the operator's original filing.

The trend: The FCC is licensing satellite mega-constellations in staged increments, turning deployment scale into a negotiated outcome between operators and the regulator.
