Qualcomm has been building dedicated extended-reality silicon since the Snapdragon XR1, its first dedicated XR platform in 2018, and its XR1 Smart Viewer reference design already pulled Lenovo's ThinkReality A3 toward glasses form factors. The Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 extends that arc decisively: a 4nm chip built specifically for thin glasses rather than repurposed from headset-class parts like the XR2.

The timing matters commercially as much as technically. With Qualcomm guiding that revenue from Apple will decline faster than expected and reporting quarterly revenue down year over year, new device categories are where it needs growth — and AR glasses are one of the few categories where its reference-design playbook has already produced shipping products.
