Memo: Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao says FTX's near collapse “severely” shook confidence in the crypto industry, offers some deal details, and halts FTT sales

Changpeng Zhao tells employees that the bailout of its chief rival is ‘not a win’  —  The near collapse of FTX has …

Financial Times Joshua Oliver

Context & Ripple Effects

Binance's outreach to FTX followed a rapidly worsening relationship between the two companies and a run on FTX that related coverage says Binance helped intensify. The memo frames a prospective rescue as damage control for an industry whose confidence has been shaken, rather than a straightforward competitive victory.

The proposed transaction was already under severe strain: reporting from the same day said Binance was unlikely to complete the acquisition after reviewing FTX's data and loan commitments, and it subsequently walked away after reviewing FTX's finances.

First-order effects

  • Binance's halt to FTT sales removes an immediate additional source of selling from the token while the company assesses a possible FTX transaction.
  • FTX employees, customers, and counterparties face a rescue process whose terms Binance is still qualifying, rather than a completed takeover.

Second-order effects

  • Other exchanges that had declined FTX, including Coinbase and OKX in related reporting, are less likely to become fallback buyers as Binance's review exposes the scale of FTX's obligations.
  • Binance's dual role in the FTT sell-off and potential rescue puts its decisions at the center of confidence for both FTX and the token tied to it.

Third-order effects

  • The episode points to a crypto-market legitimacy gap in which a major exchange's public trading decisions and private rescue negotiations can become inseparable from confidence in a rival.
  • If rescue efforts continue to depend on dominant exchange operators, concentration of market influence—not just the health of individual platforms—becomes a core risk for the sector.

The trend: Crypto's legitimacy gap is widening as stress at a major platform turns exchange competition, token liquidity, and industry-wide confidence into the same event.

I absolutely believe @cz_binance. I think he found out that @SBF_FTX was pushing regulators in a direction not good for crypto in general and specifically bad for @binance and he basically publicly distanced himself. I doubt he truly foresaw the contagion. https://twitter.com/...
