Sony plans to launch the PlayStation VR2 on February 22 for $550, £530, or €600; preorders open November 15

Sony will launch its PS VR2 headset on February 22nd priced at $549.99.  The PS VR2 will be priced at $549.99 in the US, €599.99 across Europe, £529.99, and ¥74,980 in Japan.

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Sony had previously committed PS VR2 only to an early-2023 window without pricing. The February date and $550 entry point turn that outline into a defined preorder proposition, with controllers and headphones included in the launch package.

The price also resets Sony's own VR benchmark: the original PlayStation VR launched at $399, or $499 with its required camera and Move-controller bundle. PS VR2 was later repriced to $400, showing that the initial premium was not permanent.

First-order effects

  • Sony sets PS VR2's US entry price at $550 and opens preorders ahead of the February launch, giving PlayStation owners a concrete purchase decision rather than a release-window promise.
  • The bundled Sense controllers and stereo headphones make the launch offer more complete than the earlier PlayStation VR's $499 accessory bundle, while raising the upfront commitment by $50.

Second-order effects

  • Sony's $550 launch price makes the new headset a premium console accessory, so its sales case depends on persuading existing PlayStation users that the upgraded package warrants a higher all-in spend than the first-generation bundle.
  • Sony's later cut to a $400 price indicates that price became the principal lever for broadening PS VR2's appeal after its initial launch positioning.

Third-order effects

  • If Sony's repricing pattern holds, console VR hardware will increasingly follow a two-stage model: premium launch bundles establish the product, then lower standalone pricing is used to pursue wider adoption.
  • The comparison with the original PlayStation VR's bundled price suggests VR remains an accessory category where platform holders must continually balance feature upgrades against a price ceiling set by the console audience.

The trend: Sony's PS VR strategy is moving from launch-day premium packaging toward price-led efforts to expand a console accessory market.

That price is steep in a normal year, but now? That's Vita memory card levels of put-offery. https://twitter.com/...

PSVR2 on Feb 22 for $549, which is definitely more expensive than what the PSVR was at $399. I don't doubt the tech has been massively upgraded, but as cool as it is, the price will be a pain point. I for one though am just starting in VR accessibility and would like to try it. h…
