Salesforce announces Net Zero Marketplace, which will aggregate offset providers and rating agencies for carbon credits, launching in October 2022 in the US

Salesforce Inc. is launching a marketplace for carbon credits that will aggregate offset providers and rating agencies …

Bloomberg Brody Ford

Context & Ripple Effects

Net Zero Marketplace completes a three-step build-out of Salesforce's climate business: the Step Up Declaration alliance in 2018 established the advocacy posture, and the Sustainability Cloud launched in 2019 gave companies the measurement layer for their footprint. The marketplace adds the missing transaction layer on top — aggregating offset providers and rating agencies so customers can buy credits where they already track emissions.

The timing matters because demand-side infrastructure was forming in parallel: Stripe's Frontier initiative had already pulled Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, and others into funding carbon removal, and the Frontier coalition later grew past $1B in pledged purchases with Salesforce at the table. Salesforce is positioning itself between that corporate demand and a fragmented supply of offsets.

First-order effects

  • Offset providers and rating agencies gain a new distribution channel into Salesforce's enterprise customer base when the marketplace launches in the US in October 2022.
  • Corporate buyers using Sustainability Cloud can move from measuring emissions to purchasing rated credits inside the same vendor relationship, collapsing a procurement step.

Second-order effects

  • Rating agencies featured on the marketplace acquire de facto gatekeeping power over which offsets are sellable, making their methodologies a competitive variable for offset providers.
  • Other enterprise software vendors with sustainability or procurement products face pressure to bundle credit transactions with their own reporting tools rather than cede that workflow to Salesforce.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, carbon markets consolidate around software platforms as intermediaries — the same 'Cloud' productization Salesforce applied to NFTs earlier in 2022 — with platform-chosen raters shaping quality standards across the industry.
  • Combined with Frontier-style advance purchase commitments, corporate demand for credits becomes institutionalized through a small set of intermediating platforms rather than bilateral deals between buyers and offset projects.

The trend: Enterprise software vendors are layering transaction marketplaces on top of emissions-measurement tools, turning carbon-credit trading into a platform business.
