California's AG files an antitrust lawsuit against Amazon, focusing on the company allegedly penalizing sellers who list products at lower prices on other sites

inflating prices across the web isn't exactly customer-obsessed. https://twitter.com/... Stacy Mitchell / @stacyfmitchell : 8/8. Here's the filing itself. Lots of damning quotes and data from independent sellers. (It also cites the findings of ILSR's 2021 report, Amazon's Toll Road.) https://oag.ca.gov/...

#BREAKING: We're suing @Amazon for blocking price competition. Amazon coerces merchants into deals that keep prices artificially high, knowing full well they have no real alternative. We won't let Amazon bend the market to its will at the expense of consumers and the economy.

Nice summary of California's case. The key questions are (1) by how much would Amazon's take rate fall if merchants were allowed to steer customers to lower cost platforms and (2) how much of the take rate decrease would be passed through to consumers? https://www.nytimes.com/...

Given the size of California's economy and Amazon's role in it, “this is a piece of litigation that has significant national implications,” a California professor of antitrust law said. https://www.nytimes.com/...

    3. Amazon claims to have ended this “most favored nation” policy (i.e., don't you dare sell for less elsewhere) in 2019, but in fact it just obscured its functioning.

This suit is a pretty major reputation hit for Amazon — inflating prices across the web isn't exactly customer-obsessed. https://twitter.com/...

Amazon's contracts with third-party sellers and wholesalers inflate prices, stifle competition and violate California's antitrust and unfair competition laws, the state attorney general said in a lawsuit https://www.wsj.com/... via @WSJ
