This closes a two-year gap in Ring's encryption rollout. The company promised end-to-end video encryption back in September 2020, shipped it as an eight-camera technical preview that January, then opened it to all US users by mid-2021 (July 2021) — but only for hardwired and plug-in devices. Battery-powered doorbells, arguably the most popular segment of Ring's lineup, were left out until now.

The catch is the same one that has defined the whole program: opting in disables some features, so owners are being asked to trade convenience for privacy rather than get both. That trade-off is the real story of Ring's privacy arc, which also includes mandatory two-factor authentication and curbs on third-party analytics.

First-order effects

  • Battery-powered doorbell owners can now enable end-to-end encryption on their video feeds, but only by accepting disabled features — the same opt-in-with-trade-offs structure applied earlier to hardwired and plug-in cameras.
