The story behind the story

A profile of Kiwi Farms, a forum owned and operated by former 8chan admin Josh Moon, that has become synonymous with doxxing, swatting, and harassment campaigns

A trans streamer and a Republican congresswoman were targeted at their homes in the last month.  Experts warn this is just the beginning.

NBC News

Context & Ripple Effects

The report landed as Cloudflare was defending its decision not to withdraw service over “despicable” content, a position that put infrastructure providers at the center of the dispute over Kiwi Farms. Days later, the company’s belated Kiwi Farms ban crystallized the argument that platform rules can struggle to address coordinated harm without explicit calls for violence.

Later coverage shows that losing Cloudflare did not end the forum’s presence: Kiwi Farms stayed online after the provider split, while posters also gathered on Telegram and Discord. The story therefore marks an early point in a longer fight involving activists, infrastructure firms, and the forum’s operator Josh Moon.

First-order effects

  • The reported targeting of people at their homes turns Kiwi Farms’ activity into an immediate safety issue for those singled out, rather than solely a dispute over offensive online speech.
  • Cloudflare’s decision to provide service to Kiwi Farms faces sharper scrutiny because the forum’s alleged harms are tied to doxxing, swatting, and offline targeting.

Second-order effects

  • Cloudflare’s subsequent removal of Kiwi Farms forces the forum to seek continuity beyond a single infrastructure provider, while its users’ movement to Telegram and Discord broadens the set of services facing moderation pressure.
  • Activists seeking to remove Kiwi Farms must pursue a distributed campaign across hosting, communications, and other service layers rather than treating one provider’s action as a final remedy.

Third-order effects

  • The later survival of Kiwi Farms after Cloudflare’s removal suggests that provider-by-provider enforcement can disperse harassment communities across services instead of eliminating their reach.
  • If this pattern persists, the practical boundary of platform responsibility will be set increasingly by coordinated action across infrastructure and communications services, not by a single host’s content policy.

The trend: Online-harassment enforcement is shifting from disputes over one platform’s rules to a multi-service struggle over whether deplatforming can meaningfully constrain resilient communities.

I've been covering bad parts of the internet for long time now. For years, there was one site extremist researchers warned me not to cover because publicizing it would be dangerous. But it's time people know KiwiFarms—and how they're chasing political enemies around the world.

Cloudflare certainly isn't in a position to make post-by-post decisions in the same way as a social media site, and it's reasonable for them to have a high bar before retracting services. But when a forum is completely dedicated to causing harm to individuals, it is time to act.

Here's my story with @kattenbarge on KiwiFarms and how political terror will look going into 2024. They are weaponizing your data to terrorize political dissidents — and they're broadening what they view to be an enemy every day. I hope you read it. https://www.nbcnews.com/...

Please everyone read this. This will make you rightly angry. This is no different than nazi brown-shirts. This is 21st century terrorism and must be treated as such. Fear not. https://twitter.com/...

Sites and organized harassment like this are already rampant; being used to terrorize politicians but also regular citizens to a horrifying, demoralizing and debilitating degree. If you're not worried about such data abuse and we don't legally curtail it, it will only get worse. …

Thread on Kiwifarms. Yesterday, Kiwifarms attempted to doxx me, posting an address and phone number for me, and then mocking my cybersecurity degree (I don't have one). I'm not trans. They're coming for you, and currently target @cloudflarehelp's customers who voice concern. http…

I spoke out and defended Clara Sorrenti aka keffals, and I was targeted by kiwi farms. They created a thread about me and doxed me. A user threatened to dox my mother if Joshua Moon made my thread public. He made my thread public and my mom was doxed. https://twitter.com/...

Imagine being compared unfavorably to 4chan and 8chan. “Brennan said that, while websites like 4chan and 8chan can pose substantial national security risks, 'what Moon is doing is worse, because he's actually targeting specific people. https://twitter.com/...

The future of political violence is a bunch of burgeoning serial killers openly conspiring about which of their “enemies” they'll destroy next, enabled by red pill-addled tech bros and influencers looking for cultists to bomb children's hospitals and buy their sweatshirts. https:…
