Cameo announces Cameo Live, letting users have 10-minute live video calls with celebrities, expanding on DMs and Cameo Calls

We all have those celebrities or notable figures we'd like to sit down with for a conversation.  It would be nice, for instance, to be able to ask a talented musician about their creative process.

Gizmodo Lauren Leffer

Context & Ripple Effects

Cameo built its business on prerecorded personalized videos — a marketplace that grew from 20 to 125 employees in 15 months per a 2020 profile, and became a pandemic income stream for celebrities supplementing lost work. The live format is not new territory: the company first tried booked 10-minute Zoom calls under the Cameo Live name in 2020, then moved the experience in-app with Cameo Calls, up to 15 minutes, in September 2021.

The new announcement folds live video into the same surface as Cameo's DMs, making conversation rather than a single clip the product. That matters because it pushes Cameo from selling artifacts (videos) toward selling time with a celebrity — a higher-touch, presumably higher-priced tier sitting on top of its existing catalog.

First-order effects

  • Fans can now book a 10-minute live call with a celebrity inside Cameo's app alongside DMs, giving talent a second live format after Cameo Calls and a reason to keep availability calendars on the platform.
  • Celebrities who joined Cameo as a gig-economy income source during the pandemic gain a premium SKU beyond the standard shoutout video.

Second-order effects

  • Cameo's earlier Sendoso integration showed businesses buying celebrity moments for clients; a schedulable live-call product gives corporate gifting and fan-engagement platforms a more expensive, interactive item to resell.
  • Rivals in paid creator interactions face pressure to match a bundled funnel — DMs for discovery, live calls for conversion — rather than competing on one-off clip pricing alone.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, celebrity monetization shifts from asynchronous recorded content toward metered live access, with marketplaces like Cameo owning the scheduling, payment, and discovery layers between fan and star.
  • Live formats raise moderation and safety stakes for platforms brokering unscripted real-time conversations at scale — a regulatory and trust burden that prerecorded clips never carried.

The trend: Paid celebrity fan engagement is evolving from one-off recorded videos toward scheduled live conversations sold through marketplace apps.
