Sources: a rugged Apple Watch slated for 2022 will have a larger, nearly 2" shatter-resistant screen, non-aluminum metal case, longer workout tracking, and more

Apple Inc. plans its largest smartwatch display to date, a bigger battery and a rugged metal casing as part …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple's rugged-watch effort had already been framed as an Explorer Edition for athletes and extreme environments, and subsequent planning coverage placed an extreme-sports model alongside faster mainstream and entry-level watches. The new details turn that category into a defined hardware proposition rather than a label.

Later coverage described a larger, more durable Apple Watch Pro, reinforcing that screen size and tougher materials were becoming linked features in Apple's higher-end Watch positioning.

First-order effects

  • Apple would add a distinct rugged Watch configuration, using a larger shatter-resistant display, non-aluminum metal case, bigger battery, and longer workout tracking to address the extreme-sports segment.

Second-order effects

  • The rugged model gives Apple a clearer way to separate an extreme-sports Watch from the entry-level model in its reported product plans, making durability and endurance central differentiators rather than general Series upgrades.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues pairing larger displays with more durable cases—as the later Pro reporting suggests—the Apple Watch line shifts toward more explicit hardware segmentation by use case, not just iterative annual updates.

The trend: Apple is segmenting the Apple Watch portfolio through larger, tougher hardware tailored to higher-intensity use cases.

New story: Apple's Rugged Extreme Sports Watch coming later this year will have a larger, nearly 2-inch screen, non-aluminum metal case, more shatter-resistant screen, larger battery, body temperature sensor, improvements to hiking & swim tracking & more: https://www.bloomberg.co…

The Apple Watch sizes such as 41mm, 45mm etc refer to the height of the Apple Watch's case, not the screen. Therefore the larger Apple Watch won't be a 50mm, despite some calling it that.

The only metal I can think of that makes sense for this is titanium. Wonder if the rugged watch is really a next generation “Edition.” https://twitter.com/...

@ianzelbo What do you think? Based on the history of the source of your renders?

@markgurman I have no authority to say anything as a leak, but I do believe it will be. The design matches a “rugged” style and would be more drop resistant. Months ago, Jon shared an image of a CAD where the watch looked much larger compared to the Series 7, which matches new fi…

    @markgurman But is it flat

Since the display size of the new Apple Watch is 1,99" diagonally, it should be ~48mm including the frama. 47mm is just a display only without the frame. Also new metal different from aluminum could be liquid metal with an alloy 👀

@markgurman @ianzelbo you really trying to act like you didn't say literally the exact same thing 48 hours before the event? https://twitter.com/...

This is a good idea. They could compete with Garmin and the others, if they don't go cheap and lazy on product development. A fail in this space would be the current Apple Watch with a slightly larger screen. https://twitter.com/...
