The conclave ban is one episode in a longer squeeze on Tesla inside China: sources reported in 2021 that military and state employees were barred from driving Teslas over fears their sensors could beam data back to the US (military and state-employee restrictions), and Tesla responded by building a local data center to store all China-generated vehicle data. The Wired piece flips the lens — if Chinese regulators treat Western sensor-packed cars as surveillance risks, Western roads filled with Chinese cars raise the mirror-image question.

    Teslas push the normalization of video surveillance much more than Ring but I rarely see it discussed. When I drove a Tesla I was surprised it records video of people walking by the car then wondered how often we show up in such videos without consent. https://www.wired.com/...
