In a weekly Q&A, Mark Zuckerberg told staff that Meta reduced its target for hiring engineers in 2022 to around 6K-7K, down from an initial plan to hire ~10K

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta had already frozen engineer hiring in several product groups in May while saying layoffs were not planned. The lower annual engineering target turns that targeted restraint into a company-level revision of its staffing plans.

The decision sits at the start of a longer retrenchment: Meta later froze hiring and restructured teams, then cut jobs and open roles before defining low net headcount growth as its standard.

First-order effects

  • Meta reduces the number of engineering roles it intends to fill in 2022 by roughly 3,000–4,000 versus its initial plan, limiting hiring across the company.
  • Engineering candidates face fewer openings at Meta as the company shifts from expansionary recruiting toward tighter workforce planning.

Second-order effects

  • Meta product teams must compete for a smaller pool of approved engineering hires, reinforcing the targeted hiring freezes already affecting Facebook Gaming, Dating, and Commerce.
  • The lower target foreshadows the broader hiring freeze and team-budget reductions Meta later imposed, making recruiting capacity a lever in its cost controls.

Third-order effects

  • Meta's later job cuts and 1%–2% net-growth target indicate a durable shift from rapid headcount expansion to operating with tighter workforce growth.
  • For large technology employers, hiring plans increasingly become an early indicator of broader cost actions, including role withdrawals, restructurings, and layoffs.

The trend: Meta's reduced engineering target is an early point in its shift from aggressive hiring toward constrained headcount growth and workforce restructuring.

Cox said Meta would need to increase 5x the number of graphic processing units (GPUs) in its data centers by the end of the year to support the “discovery” push, which requires extra computing power for AI to surface popular posts from across FB and IG https://www.reuters.com/...

@JerryCap it implies that FB underinvested fwiw - and TikTok algo is def not a narrative - but if there is 1 thing that can fix the FB / IG narrative is a few billion GPUs

@JerryCap It's kind of mind blowing that recommendation engines for short form videos require as much GPUs as self driving autonomous vehicles.

Overall a decent response from $META. I think they are taking the right approach. Supercluster is great for long term and the success of Reels. I do not think Reels is a flop, growing too fast imo. In-app shopping is crucial to mitigate ATT and they working on it (finally)

presumably this is why instagram is half ads now. the only place they are really confident of your identity is in their own apps

@JerryCap i don't think so but i do think they have a bit of an advantage given it's just newer. They def were not inserting as much AI into that bitch as Tiktok was def can get a catch up - and that is only enabled by GPUS

@_fabknowledge_ What's unique about what drives the TikTok algo. The culture may be different, the user base may be different but I don't think the tech is.
