Excellent article from @_KarenHao on the collision of AI ethics, Big Tech, and the AI hype cycle. Big Tech is pushing the hardest on AI, and they're the companies that we REALLY don't want to be pouring this kind of money into the field. https://twitter.com/...

Even worse, these monopolies are so powerful that they are, at the moment, practically unregulated. Hopefully the political winds are shifting, but until then, we depend on them to fix their own problems. Good luck with that.

I wrote about a topic I've been itching to address for some time: how AI PR hype, coupled with increasingly flashy AI-generated outputs, is creating a dangerous gap between the technology's perception & reality. A collab with @MilesKruppa. https://www.wsj.com/...

@_KarenHao They are incentivized to drive higher user engagement and addiction, and are focused on quarterly profits. They ignore or fire ethicists like @timnitGebru and @mmitchell_ai who point out valid concerns and problems with the tech, because it might slow down development.

@_KarenHao ... These monopolies have lost their way and become deeply unethical. The public perception of this tech is skewed, and the public is not generally being made aware of the ethical problems and inherent biases of the tech. This problem will only get much worse over time…

@_KarenHao ... These companies are monopolizing industries, hiring engineers like crazy, and are even delusional in believing their own hype, like when @ylecun tried to tell me that Facebook's AI was solving every content moderation problem out there. https://link.springer.com/..…
  • @mmitchell_ai @mmitchell_ai on x
@dlauer ... It's generous of you to say that it's (just?) that it might slow down development! I think a large part of it is people with firing power throwing tantrums because they want their work to be solely defined by their own narratives. It's about territory/narcissism/power…
  • @dlauer Dave Lauer on x
@mmitchell_ai ... I'll defer to you on that, I tend to look for economic explanations, and maybe am too reductionist - you obviously (unfortunately) lived it.
  • @timnitgebru Timnit Gebru on x
Who needs PR departments when the newspapers are doing it for the companies on their own?

SO TRUE! This and also the other tweets of the thread, actually. Especially the one about “well-known” #AI insiders that work for unethical companies and help them amass even more power and money from exploiting their customers, users, and society at large. https://twitter.com/..…

Yann LeCun's been telling outright lies like “94% of hate speech is taken down by AI” while we're seeing our communities destroyed & FB is doing shit. And I just saw an MIT Tech Review article which is basically like “here's what Yann LeCun thinks about AI.” https://twitter.com/.…
