For roughly a decade, Google Earth Engine's satellite imagery and analysis tools were effectively an academic and nonprofit resource — the platform behind nonprofit work tracking deforestation, floods, and droughts. Opening it to any commercial or government organization through Google Cloud converts that research asset into a paid enterprise product.

The move follows a familiar Google playbook: in 2015 the company dropped Earth Pro from $399 a year to free to widen its user base, and later added consumer-facing layers like classroom tours and historical imagery. This time the expansion runs through Google Cloud, making Earth Engine a differentiator in the enterprise cloud contest against AWS and Azure.
