CEO Daniel Ek: Spotify plans to use the freemium model for audiobooks; the DOJ is reviewing Spotify's yet-to-close acquisition of audiobook distributor Findaway

This article first ran in Hot Pod Insider, The Verge's audio industry newsletter.  —  Spotify wants to make audiobooks the next pillar of its business.

The Verge Ariel Shapiro

Context & Ripple Effects

Spotify had already announced its planned Findaway acquisition as a route into audiobook distribution. Related coverage framed the combination as putting Spotify across audiobook production, distribution, and retail, extending its effort to become a broader audio app.

The pending DOJ review makes that expansion strategy conditional just as Spotify identifies audiobooks as its next business pillar. Later coverage of a proposed subscriber audiobook allowance shows the company’s audiobook push evolving toward bundle design as well as free access.

First-order effects

  • Spotify can signal a freemium audiobook offering, but its yet-to-close Findaway purchase remains under DOJ review, leaving the distributor’s integration into Spotify unresolved.
  • Findaway remains the acquisition target while the review proceeds, rather than an immediately integrated supply and distribution arm for Spotify’s audiobook plans.

Second-order effects

  • A freemium entry point puts Spotify’s audiobook proposition in direct competition for listener attention with paid and bundled access models, making conversion from free listening central to the offering’s economics.
  • If the acquisition closes, Spotify’s planned control across production, distribution, and retail would concentrate more of the audiobook value chain inside one audio platform.

Third-order effects

  • The combination of free access and vertical audiobook infrastructure points toward audio platforms competing through bundled libraries and distribution control, rather than treating audiobooks as a standalone retail category.
  • Regulatory review of the Findaway deal makes acquisition scrutiny a constraint on that platform-consolidation path, particularly where a service seeks to combine audience reach with content distribution.

The trend: Spotify’s audiobook strategy is part of a wider shift toward all-in-one audio platforms that use free and bundled access to deepen engagement while seeking greater control of content distribution.

1/ With audiobooks, the publisher sets the price of the book. So an advertising model is only possible if the publishers get a more attractive revenue stream than under their existing model. First party Spotify published audiobooks would be different. https://www.theverge.com/...

Spotify becoming the “all-audio platform” (i.e. by expanding into audiobooks) feels like Soundcloud's (sadly) missed opportunity. https://www.theverge.com/... #StreamingWars

Maybe Ek shouldn't have floated the (very plausible) idea that they don't turn a profit cause, “Spotify simply isn't that good a business” https://newsroom.spotify.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

We knew this was coming all the way back when Spotify first made its big push into podcasting. It'll be interesting to see whether Spotify can introduce an advertising model to audiobooks, which hasn't really been tried yet. https://www.theverge.com/...

Will be interesting if Spotify can bring a large library of ‘unlimited access’ audiobooks. May push Amazon to bundle Audible (maybe just the streaming library) with Amazon Music and podcasts. Will we see Apple offer Apple Books audiobook library plans under Apple One? https://twi…
