The Solana blockchain was down for about four hours on Wednesday after a bug blocked consensus; network validators disabled the feature to restart the network

SOL is down 11% for the day as Solana dealt with another period of downtime, forcing a rollback and restart by validators.  —  In brief

Decrypt Andrew Hayward

Context & Ripple Effects

Solana entered this incident after a January bout of instability that drew complaints from DeFi traders and a seven-hour May stoppage tied to bot traffic around Candy Machine. The recurrence matters because both application demand and core network operations had already tested the chain's reliability.

A 2021 outage had also required the network to come back online after roughly 17 hours, making validator-led recovery an established part of Solana's operating history rather than a one-off response.

First-order effects

  • Solana validators disabled the faulty feature and coordinated a rollback and restart, interrupting normal network operation while consensus was restored.
  • SOL fell during the disruption, immediately exposing token holders to the market's response to another availability failure.

Second-order effects

  • Solana Labs and validators face added pressure to address both consensus faults and the traffic stresses implicated in the preceding NFT-mint outage, while DeFi users have another reliability episode to weigh.
  • Applications and traders on Solana must account for the operational risk of a validator-coordinated restart, rather than treating chain availability as continuous.

Third-order effects

  • Repeated incidents point to a governance trade-off in which a sovereign network's recovery depends on coordinated validator intervention when automated consensus fails.
  • If outages continue across distinct causes, Solana's competitive position will increasingly depend on whether upgrades and traffic controls reduce the need for network restarts.

The trend: Solana's growth is being accompanied by a recurring test of whether high-demand blockchain infrastructure can maintain availability without emergency validator coordination.

Validator operators successfully completed a cluster restart of Mainnet Beta at 9:00 PM UTC, following a roughly 4 and a half hour outage after the network failed to reach consensus. Network operators an dapps will continue to restore client services over the next several hours.

Solana halt today, what happened? A bug relating to durable nonces was triggered on a majority of validators, leading to a block hash mismatch & validators stalling. This was actually a known bug that was being fixed and hadn't been triggered in this form previously.

Apparently Solana is down. If you don't know what that means, congratulations. You have won in the game called life.

Haven't been following the Solana outages, but curious that once cold storage durable nonce usage increased (by exchanges) new issues arise https://twitter.com/...

This happens so frequently I'm not sure anyone in crypto really believes $SOL can replace $ETH https://twitter.com/...

Solana is down again? The future of money is less stable than anyone expected. https://status.solana.com/ https://twitter.com/...
