YouTube takes down 70K+ videos and 9K+ channels covering the Ukraine war for violating content guidelines, including videos referring to a “liberation mission”
this is gutsy given it's the largest American social media platform to be left operating freely in Russia. And it shows why cutting off access to markets like Russia won't always be the right answer during crackdowns. https://www.theguardian.com/ ... @dewaleadesanya : @guardian This is censorship. Let me hear all sides of the story, do my own fact checking and research and make up my own mind. What in the world happened to free speech!? This is highly hypocritical! @lezluthor : The CEO of YOUTUBE won a ‘Freedom of Expression’ award in a ceremony that was sponsored by YOUTUBE... so basically they gave themselves an award in free speech after shutting down tens of thousands of accounts that had alternative views. https://twitter.com/... Hans de Vreij / @hdevreij : ‘YouTube removes more than 70,000 videos and 9,000 channels relating to Ukraine war’ https://www.theguardian.com/ ... “You can imagine a lot of it being the narratives that are coming from Russian government, or Russian actors on behalf of the Russian government” John Spencer / @spencerguard : This is criminal! And then I go there, like I did for Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020. This is history being erased. Stop it @POTUS https://twitter.com/... Tim Graham / @timothyjgraham : 'Channels associated with Russia's Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs have also been temporarily suspended from uploading videos in recent months for describing the war as a “liberation mission”.' @TwitterSafety, your move. https://twitter.com/... @theanonleaks : YouTube has taken down more than 70,000 videos and 9,000 channels related to the war in Ukraine for violating content guidelines, including removal of videos that referred to the invasion as a “liberation mission”. https://www.theguardian.com/ ... Dimitri Lascaris / @dimitrilascaris : #Russia's government says it does not plan to shut down YouTube despite YouTube's “unprecedented” #censorship of what YouTube characterizes as “narratives that are coming from Russian government, or Russian actors on behalf of the Russian government.” https://www.theguardian.com/ ...
