After mocking Apple for removing the iPhone headphone jack in an August 2021 ad for the Pixel 5a, Google quietly removes the headphone jack on the Pixel 6a

The Pixel 6A offers a lot of good features, but not a headphone jack  —  Google just revealed the Pixel 6A at Google I/O on Wednesday …

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

Google’s Pixel line has treated the headphone jack inconsistently: the Pixel 2 was reported without one, while the budget Pixel 3a made the port part of its value proposition in the 3a’s feature set. The Pixel 6a’s launch alongside Tensor, OLED, and camera upgrades puts the omission inside a broader midrange specification reset.

Google’s earlier Pixel 5a advertising used Apple’s removal of the port as a contrast point. Dropping that distinction on the Pixel 6a matters because Google is now adopting the same trade-off it publicly criticized.

First-order effects

  • Pixel 6a buyers who use wired 3.5mm headphones lose a feature that helped distinguish the Pixel 3a, while Google’s new midrange model no longer carries that legacy hardware choice forward.
  • Google can no longer use the headphone jack as a direct point of contrast with Apple’s iPhone after having used Apple’s decision in Pixel 5a marketing.

Second-order effects

  • Apple faces one fewer hardware-based attack from Google in the midrange phone market, shifting Pixel 6a comparisons toward the device’s Tensor chip, display, cameras, and fingerprint sensor.
  • Google’s Pixel A-series product positioning becomes less anchored in retaining older conveniences and more dependent on the newer components highlighted in the Pixel 6a launch.

Third-order effects

  • If Google maintains the Pixel 6a approach in later A-series models, the budget Pixel line will increasingly converge with flagship smartphone design trade-offs rather than preserving the headphone jack as a midrange differentiator.

The trend: Google’s Pixel A-series is moving toward feature parity with the company’s newer phone design choices, even when that reverses a prior value and marketing distinction.

Is there a list somewhere of recent smartphone releases that STILL have a headphone hack? https://twitter.com/...

we're swiftly careening toward a world where the only phones that have headphone jacks cost $1600 https://www.theverge.com/... https://www.theverge.com/...

Confirmed by a look at the Pixel 6a tech specs: no headphone jack. Thanks, I hate it. https://t.co/wmDdhyXxu9 https://t.co/NM4BGXPXpy
