Cross-chain bridges became crypto's most lucrative attack surface almost overnight: Chainalysis counted $1B+ stolen from bridge exploits across seven incidents in a little over a year, with Dune putting $21B+ locked on Ethereum bridges alone — a honeypot sitting on code that is still young. The February–March thefts reported here are the wave that pushed the total toward $2B across 13 hacks in 2022, some 69% of all funds stolen that year.

The strategic opening is straightforward: if decentralized bridges keep losing user funds, centralized exchanges can sell the same cross-chain swap under their own custody, insurance posture, and brand. It is a repeat of an old pattern — after 2021's 20+ hacks of $10M or more, security itself became a product feature rather than a background assumption.

First-order effects

  • Centralized exchanges capture cross-chain token-swap volume that previously flowed through decentralized bridges, converting a security failure they didn't cause into fee revenue and deposit growth.
  • Users gain a custodial alternative to bridges at exactly the moment confidence in bridge code is lowest, shifting the choice from 'which bridge' to 'custodial vs. trustless.'

Second-order effects

  • Concentrating cross-chain flows back into exchange custody recreates the exchange-hack risk surface: the later HTX and Heco bridge exploits showed that even exchange-linked bridge infrastructure remains a target, so exchanges inherit the very threat they are marketing against.
  • Decentralized bridge teams are forced to compete on audited security and insurance rather than speed or fee levels, raising their costs just as exchanges undercut them on trust.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, cross-chain infrastructure bifurcates into custodial rails run by exchanges and hardened trustless protocols, with security track record — not decentralization ideology — deciding where liquidity sits.
  • As more value moves through exchange-operated bridge features, these functions start to look like regulated financial plumbing, inviting the same scrutiny applied to exchanges themselves.

The trend: Crypto's cross-chain layer is consolidating around trusted intermediaries as repeated failures of trustless bridge designs push security from a protocol property back into a branded service.
