Stripe now lets companies pay users in cryptocurrencies via USDC, starting with Twitter paying some creators in crypto for Ticketed Spaces and Super Follows

- Online payments firm Stripe says it will start offering merchants the ability to pay their users in cryptocurrency through the stablecoin USDC.

CNBC Ryan Browne

Context & Ripple Effects

Stripe had already widened its customer base to include exchanges, wallet providers, and NFT marketplaces through support for crypto businesses and exchange on-ramps. Twitter is the first named creator platform using its USDC payout rail, turning that infrastructure into a payout product for end users.

The move is an early part of a broader Stripe stablecoin arc: the company later added USDC acceptance for merchant payments and a fiat-to-crypto widget that put compliance and fraud handling inside its product stack.

First-order effects

  • Twitter creators selected for Ticketed Spaces and Super Follows can receive earnings in USDC rather than solely through conventional payout methods.
  • Stripe gives merchant customers a mechanism to send USDC to users, extending its role from collecting payments to disbursing platform earnings.

Second-order effects

  • Creator platforms and the payment providers serving them face a more direct comparison with Twitter's crypto payout option, especially where creators already use crypto wallets.
  • Stripe's earlier crypto-business customers—exchanges and wallet providers—gain a potential source of USDC recipients as platform payouts feed into their services.

Third-order effects

  • If Stripe continues connecting payouts, conversion, and merchant acceptance, stablecoins become a two-way payment rail within a mainstream processor rather than a standalone crypto feature.
  • The resulting competition will center on whether payment platforms can combine programmable settlement with the compliance controls that merchants and platforms require.

The trend: Payment processors are embedding stablecoins across payout, conversion, and checkout workflows, making crypto rails usable within existing platform-payment stacks.

New: Stripe is the latest financial giant jumping into crypto. The online payments firm is launching a new feature that lets merchants offer payouts in crypto. It'll launch first with Twitter, allowing select users to get paid in the stablecoin USDC. https://www.cnbc.com/...
