Twitter says it has been working on an edit tweet option since last year and will start testing the feature in Twitter Blue Labs in the coming months

now that everyone is asking... yes, we've been working on an edit feature since last year! no, we didn't get the idea from a poll 😉 we're kicking off testing within @TwitterBlue Labs in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn't, and what's possible.

The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.

1/ We've been exploring how to build an Edit feature in a safe manner since last year and plan to begin testing it within @TwitterBlue Labs in the coming months. Sharing a few more insights on how we're thinking about Edit 🧵 https://twitter.com/...

hi hi - I'm a product lead at Twitter looking for input from all kinds of sources, but also directly from the community itself. I wanna know: What's the one feature you wished Twitter had?

A lot of people are underestimating the abuse potential of an edit button. Recently looked at a massive cryptocurrency scam that was supported by automated editing of a verified FB page's posts to create a legit-looking brokerage. The abuse state diagram here is massive.

@Liz_Wheeler @elonmusk We solved this on Facebook a long time ago. You just include an indicator that it has been edited along with a change log. If you are really worried about embeds they can point to a specific revision in that history but with a link to the latest edit. Not a…

3/ Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation. Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.

i know it's kind of like an in-joke about adding an edit feature but i genuinely cannot imagine how this would work unless it functioned like gmail's “undo send” feature and that basically means not sending the message for a few seconds in case you change your mind
  • @erdayastronaut @erdayastronaut on x
@elonmusk Under two conditions. It's only available for a few minutes, 5-10 mins. And when an edit is made, there's a small link that shows the edit. This keeps a public record but allows the tweeter the ability to fix a simple mistake and not re-notify their followers with a new…

There is absolutely no need whatsoever for an edit button on Twitter, and anyone who believes otherwise is vastly overestimating the value of their own tweets. https://twitter.com/...

@elonmusk Here's my argument against an edit button: What if a tweet goes viral, lots of retweets & millions of impressions, & then the author completely changes the meaning? Not just a grammatical fix, but a TOTAL ideological change? Or shameless self-promote?

Twitter begins in 2006. In 2021 Twitter people finally figure out a text editor would be helpful. 15 years to figure out what every other tool that uses words already has? Now its taken them 12 months to write a feature that any talented programmer could write in a few months. ht…

Well, I was quite wrong thinking they wouldn't do this. Still seems like a bad idea, but looks they're first running limited experiments, so that's great. Maybe I'll be wrong about this being a bad idea! Still, typos vs. abuse... If there's even a mild tradeoff, I'll take typos. …

I learned early in my career that sometimes the obvious thing to do is the right thing to do even if it feels off strategy. Twitter giving users an edit button even if it violates both philosophical and technical (i.e. caching assumptions) principles of the team is an example.

Edit button would cause total chaos but also anyone that wants one is weak as hell. Delete and rewrite or live with the typo!

Asking for an edit button has been such a silly performance considering that you can quickly delete and repost a tweet, and that the people who really care about typos are really just the author and a few random nerds who think calling out typos is a personality
