Apple announces expanded creator tools for Podcasts Connect, including follower counts and the ability to upload mp3 files as subscriber-only audio

Apple Podcasts is rolling out new features to incentivize podcasters to offer paid subscriptions to listeners on the app.

TechCrunch Amanda Silberling

Context & Ripple Effects

This is another step in Apple's slow build-out of paid podcasting. It started with the affiliate program for paid subscriptions in May 2021, which paid referrers half a subscription's monthly price, and continued with the storage clean-up tools and annual subscription support Apple shipped two months after this announcement.

The throughline is measurement plus convenience: back in 2017 Apple first gave podcasters listener counts and skip data, and by 2023 it added Subscription Analytics and third-party delivery integrations. Follower counts and MP3 uploads fit that pattern — giving creators more reasons to sell subscriptions directly inside Apple Podcasts.

First-order effects

  • Podcasters using Podcasts Connect can now see follower counts and upload mp3 files as subscriber-only audio, lowering the technical barrier to running a paid show on Apple's platform.

Second-order effects

  • Independent podcast hosting providers face pressure as Apple absorbs more of the subscription workflow in-house — a tension that surfaced later when Apple opened Delegated Delivery to more hosts and third-party uploads.

Third-order effects

  • If the cadence holds — affiliate incentives, then creator tooling, then analytics — Apple Podcasts is consolidating the paid-audio stack (distribution, payments, measurement) around its own app, with creators increasingly dependent on Apple's dashboard rather than third-party hosting services.

The trend: Apple is steadily converting Podcasts Connect from a submission portal into a full creator platform, using tooling and analytics to pull paid subscriptions in-house.
