oh this article is really good, and this paragraph in particular describes my experience when i was working in blockchain back in 2017. the closer i looked, it became clear it was vaporware driven by a desire to make money. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

    • people are trying to solve complex problems with complex technology but often in web3 projects they seem to understand neither. So we end up with basic mistakes being made costing millions or wheels being reinvented poorly. 3/3

    • running online communities is hard and DAOs introducing money makes things worse not better by creating a new source of friction. • web3 communities are unusually hostile to skepticism, criticism, or even alternate points of view. This is a huge red flag. 2/3

Lots of good stuff in this interview with @web3isgreat on web3 failure patterns. • trying to solve every problem with blockchains is like trying to solve every problem with linked lists. It's a backwards approach to problem solving in tech. 1/3 https://www.platformer.news/ ...

on why i think @web3isgreat has been powerful, a question i hadn't really considered until @CaseyNewton asked one of several very thought-provoking questions in this interview on @platformer: https://www.platformer.news/ ... https://twitter.com/...

Some good, nuanced Web3/NFT/blockchain criticism here from @molly0xFFF (Wikipedia editor and author of @web3isgreat), especially re. issues of community, governance, and motives. Q&A with @CaseyNewton https://theverge.com/...

Verge interviews @molly0xFFF, who talks about Web3 and how the marketing took off in late 2021. Her project @web3isgreat is getting hundreds of thousands of hits, deservedly so! https://www.theverge.com/...

The full interview is a worth a read because it (along with other insider opinions, like those of gamers and game designers on play-to-earn) provide a perspective on the risks of trying to fix something that we already love by giving it more money. https://www.platformer.news/ ..…

Great @CaseyNewton interview with someone who has some serious perspective on web3 hype. I don't know if @molly0xFFF is wholly right, but she's not wrong! https://twitter.com/...

“When I watch DAOs..encounter a lot of the same difficulties we've seen over & over..I often find myself wondering how many members have ever been involved in community-run projects in the past?” Wikipedia admin @molly0xFFF chats w/@CaseyNewton re:"Web3"https://www.theverge.com/ …

it me 👇 “I think this is partly why some of the best critics of web3 have backgrounds in communities like Wikimedia and open source—they are familiar with the challenges that community governance and decentralization can bring.” @molly0xFFF, brilliantly https://www.platformer.new…

As someone with a long history in community-run projects, I think many web3 zealots vastly underestimate how fraught these projects can be. It's naive to directly equate “open” with “better.” Great interview that speaks to this a bit: https://www.platformer.news/ ...

This interview from @CaseyNewton with @molly0xFFF is the most brutally honest take on web3 I've seen yet. https://www.platformer.news/ ...

“I am hoping that even if #web3 turns out to be a disaster, and I do think it will, some of those people stick around, & keep going with open source software and community-driven projects without all of the blockchain bullshit.” - @molly0xFFF interviewed: https://www.platformer.n…

The part about how “Wikipedia, but contributors get paid” always fails is also great. The whole interview is just outstanding. https://www.platformer.news/ ...
  • @cwarzel Charlie Warzel on x
professionally jealous that @CaseyNewton beat me to asking @molly0xFFF to do a big ole Q&A on her @web3isgreat project and naturally it's an extremely worthwhile read https://www.platformer.news/ ...

It was an absolute pleasure to discuss crypto and why it won't create a thousand new Wikipedias with @molly0xFFF, Wikipedia contributor and creator of the sublime @web3isgreat https://www.platformer.news/ ... https://twitter.com/...
