Unpacking Meta's “regulatory headwinds” warning, as the adtech industry faces a privacy reckoning and Belgium upends IAB Europe's GDPR compliance framework

What does Meta/Facebook's favorite new phrase to bandy around in awkward earnings calls — as it warns of “regulatory headwinds” … Tweets: @carissaveliz , @mikarv , @wolfiechristl , @wolfiechristl , @gondorffhenry , @gondorffhenry , @wolfiechristl , and @wolfiechristl Tweets: Carissa Véliz / @carissaveliz : Change is coming to the #advertising industry. #Privacy is coming to town. “[N]othing short of a systemic #adtech reboot will do.” https://techcrunch.com/... Michael Veale / @mikarv : Oversimplified. Confidentiality is coming to town, while systems will shape our worlds using locked-down infrastructures and local ‘private’ targeting. It's genuinely damaging to society to conflate the two, and plays right into the hands of the biggest infrastructural platforms. https://twitter.com/... @wolfiechristl : I assume that FB, Google and other third-party companies, who constantly receive behavioral data during visits to all kinds of websites, exploit it by feeding it to their targeting, click and engagement optimization systems. We are not able to prove this with regards to Sky Bet. @wolfiechristl : Sky Bet did not provide the person affected with information about how it shared personal data with Google, Facebook, Microsoft and several other companies as required by the GDPR, not to mention information about how those companies may have used the data. Jimmy Justice / @gondorffhenry : . 2/2 pick & choose with civil rights just because it's your mates who are doing the breaching. But that's the gambling environment for you. J4P since day-1 has faught for punters' rights. In our call for transparency we don't choose what is convenient. Pathetic effort by many. Jimmy Justice / @gondorffhenry : 1/2 https://techcrunch.com/... “How this can happen in a region with laws intended to prevent this kind of systematic abuse through data misuse is an epic scandal.” Response so far by gambling's civil rights' activists = zilch, eg Dugher, Bill Barber (RP) & plenty others. You can't @wolfiechristl : TechCrunch's @riptari wrote about our investigation into digital profiling in the online gambling industry and put it into the context of recent developments. She asked SkyBet, Google, FB and UK's data protection authority ICO to comment on our research: https://techcrunch.com/... https://twitter.com/... @wolfiechristl : Microsoft, who also received data on gambling activities, declined to comment. Facebook did not comment on how it processed personal data received from Sky Bet, but implicitly “admitted it uses behavioral data inferred from gambling sites for ad targeting”, as TechCrunch put it. https://twitter.com/...
