Canalys: worldwide PC shipments grew 15% YoY in 2021 to 341M, the highest annual number since 2012; Apple shipped 28.3% more units, Acer 21.8%, and Dell 18%

It would be easy to think PC sales dropped worldwide last year amid chip shortages, but that conventional thinking would be wrong. Source: Canalys .

Context & Ripple Effects

Canalys’ annual result extends the demand surge already visible in the record Q3 2020 PC-shipment increase and in early 2021, when Gartner reported another quarter of growth after a record first quarter. Apple, Acer and Dell each grew faster than the 15% market-wide rate in this annual tally.

The result also marks a high point in an uneven PC cycle: related coverage later recorded a 15% global shipment decline in Q3 2022 before a modest market recovery in 2024. That sequence makes the 2021 total more useful as a demand-and-supply benchmark than as a permanent new baseline.

First-order effects

  • Apple, Acer and Dell gain relative unit momentum in 2021, with shipment growth of 28.3%, 21.8% and 18%, respectively, against the 15% worldwide increase.
  • Canalys’ 341M-unit total establishes the strongest annual PC-sales benchmark since 2012, despite the chip-shortage constraint cited in the report.

Second-order effects

  • PC makers that did not outgrow the market face greater pressure to secure components and convert available supply into shipments, because Apple, Acer and Dell expanded faster during the same constrained period.
  • The contrast between 2021’s annual high and the later Q3 2022 contraction raises the value of flexible inventory and procurement planning for PC vendors and their component suppliers.

Third-order effects

  • The sequence of record growth, a sharp 2022 pullback, and 2024’s slower rebound points to a PC market shaped by demand cycles and supply availability rather than a stable post-2021 growth rate.
  • If vendors continue to grow at different rates through these cycles, competitive position will depend increasingly on supply execution as well as end-market demand.

The trend: PC shipments are becoming more cyclical after the 2020–21 surge, with supply execution determining which vendors capture growth within each phase.

    WW PCs +15% in 2021 to 349M (highest since 2012). 4Q21 +1% YoY. Lenovo led in both 4Q21 & 2021. Supply constraints still likely in 1H22 https://www.idc.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Worldwide shipments of Traditional PCs reached 92.7 million units during the fourth quarter of 2021, marking 1.0% growth over Q4 2020. Read more: https://www.idc.com/.... https://twitter.com/...

PC market concludes strong 2021. IDC: “As we move through the first half of the year, we expect supply to remain constrained, especially with regards to the commercial segment where demand is the most robust.” https://www.idc.com/... https://twitter.com/...

A great 2021 for PC makers, though 4Q was meh. 4th place Apple had highest growth of unit shipments at 22% for the full year. Would have been a bigger year if not for logistics problems and supply shortages, @IDC says. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

The PC market momentum has been strong and will likely still be in the ~350m range in 2022. Installed base grew, which is relevant for continued strong annual sales. Last year was the best year since the Netbook era. I'd bet $ Apple breaks 30m Mac sales annually in 2022. https://…
