Spotify introduces Call-to-Action Cards, a visual ad format for podcasts that puts clickable cards inside show and episode pages

Spotify is today introducing is introducing a new ad format aimed at podcasters which it's calling “Call-to-Action Cards” — or CTA cards, for short.

TechCrunch Sarah Perez

Context & Ripple Effects

Call-to-Action Cards are the latest step in Spotify's multi-year buildout of a podcast advertising stack that goes beyond host-read spots. The company tested in-app ads on episode pages to replace remembered offer codes back in 2020, added real-time user-data targeting for its exclusive podcasts the same year, and launched the Spotify Audience Network with self-serve Ad Studio in 2021 — CTA cards give that infrastructure something clickable to sell against.

The format also has a cross-platform precedent: Twitter shipped a Video Website Card pairing media with a website link years earlier, so Spotify is importing an established social-ad mechanic into audio. Its earlier voice-enabled ads tried the same job — converting listener intent into action — by voice instead of tap.

First-order effects

  • Podcast advertisers on Spotify gain a persistent visual, clickable surface on show and episode pages, replacing the fragile offer-code handoff the 2020 episode-page tests were designed to fix.
  • Hosts and sales teams selling Spotify inventory can now pitch a combined audio-plus-card unit rather than a spoken URL alone.

Second-order effects

  • CTA cards give the Audience Network and Ad Studio a performance-style format to standardize across the marketplace, strengthening Spotify's pull on advertiser budgets that previously went to host-read networks.
  • Rival podcast platforms and publishers now face pressure to match clickable, page-level formats or cede direct-response ad spend to Spotify's closed loop of targeting plus measurement.

Third-order effects

  • If clickable cards plus data targeting become the norm, podcast advertising shifts from brand-awareness host reads toward directly measured performance marketing — with whoever controls the listening surface capturing both the impression and the click.
  • The pattern points to platform-owned ad stacks absorbing the independent podcast ad market, as formats only the platform can render deepen the moat around proprietary inventory.

The trend: Podcast advertising is evolving from audio-only host reads into interactive, platform-rendered formats as Spotify assembles a full-stack, self-serve ad business around its exclusive inventory.
