Instagram tests the ability to switch between a Home feed, a Favorites feed, and a Following chronological feed, rolling out to all users in H1 2022
Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced today that the app is rolling out for some users the ability to switch between different feeds.
Context & Ripple Effects
Instagram’s feed architecture had moved toward personalization with its 2016 test of an algorithmically ranked feed. By late 2021, the company had signaled it would restore some chronological choice alongside a Favorites option.
The present test is the implementation step between that commitment and the later global release of Following and Favorites feeds, which kept neither alternative as the default.
First-order effects
- Instagram users included in the test can choose among a ranked Home experience, a Favorites view, and a chronological Following view rather than relying on one feed behavior.
- Accounts a user follows or explicitly marks as favorites gain clearer routes to reach that user outside the ranked Home feed.
Second-order effects
- Instagram has to operate and explain multiple consumption paths at once, while preserving Home as a distinct ranked product rather than replacing it with a single chronological feed.
- The later global rollout without a default alternative makes active user selection the gatekeeper for chronological and Favorites consumption, limiting how much those views displace Home by default.
Third-order effects
- Instagram’s later expanded explanation of ranking and tests of recommendation controls points to a durable product model: recommendation systems remain central, with user controls layered around them to manage choice and transparency.
- If this pattern holds, feed competition will increasingly turn on how platforms expose control over ranking rather than on a binary choice between algorithmic and chronological timelines.
The trend: Social platforms are evolving from one universal feed into ranked default experiences surrounded by opt-in controls for time order, selected accounts, and recommendations.
