As the US faces record COVID-19 infections, effective use of exposure notification apps is unlikely, given slow adoption and poor data on their efficacy

Virginia's COVIDwise app was reinstalled on my new phone but didn't prompt me to enable notifications. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ... Gerrit De Vynck / @gerritd : Exposure notification apps have been around for nearly two years, and there's mounting evidence they save lives. An entire goddamn free system for being instantly and anonymously alerted to whether or not you've been exposed to COVID was developed and we just sat there and did nothing. Even in states that implemented it, almost *nobody* is using it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

Excellent thread on #ContactTracing with several eye-poppers, using social psychology and academic conservatism to explain how we got here: “we are probably in the early part of the decade of COVID.” Man, a COVID DECADE. Just let that settle in. 😷 https://twitter.com/...

super interesting thread on exposure notifications, and why they haven't gained pervasive adoption in the US https://twitter.com/...

We have the technology to easily automate contact tracing so why aren't we using it? https://twitter.com/...

My wife got a phone notification the other day about a covid exposure from 15 days earlier, which seems pointless. (She'd tested for unrelated reasons several times since the exposure, all negative.) Are these apps working the way they're supposed to? https://www.washingtonpost.c…

2 years into this and one thing is abundantly clear. Contact tracing does not work. https://twitter.com/...

1/ With the omicron surge, I have had more friends send me screenshots of exposure notifications (EN) in the last week than I have in the last year. Here are some reflections based on the work I led at @Apple working with @Google and some thoughts on the road ahead. 🧵

“Howard said the systems might be more effective in the USA if there was a federal privacy law that would make more people comfortable that their data would only be used to track the spread of the virus, & not be misused” https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ... Yep. (This Howard is @…

@Techmeme Those apps have been both a data collection scam and a convenient vehicle for government-contract-money-laundering the entire time.

Appreciate trying to get after this news cycle, but literally nothing has changed in the exposure notification/tracking app space. They suck, they always sucked, and they will continue to suck. The tech doesn't work. https://twitter.com/...

Speaking from (ahem) personal experience, it is easy to forget to activate an exposure notification app when you switch Android phones—Virginia's COVIDwise app was reinstalled on my new phone but didn't prompt me to enable notifications. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...
