Six women who work at Foxconn's Indian iPhone plant describe crowded dorms and food crawling with worms, which sickened 250+ workers, leading to protests

Reuters

Context & Ripple Effects

Foxconn’s India footprint was already part of a diversification push, with two operating plants and plans for two more in its expansion beyond China. The workers’ accounts turn employee housing and food from an internal welfare issue into an operational risk at an iPhone production site.

The reported illnesses and protest also fit a broader labor-management strain: later coverage described labor disputes and production hurdles at Foxconn in India, while a separate Zhengzhou episode involved workers protesting wages and COVID-19 fears.

First-order effects

  • More than 250 affected workers and the subsequent protest put immediate pressure on Foxconn to address dormitory and food conditions at the Indian iPhone plant.
  • The plant faces workforce disruption and heightened scrutiny of the contractor-managed conditions supporting iPhone assembly.

Second-order effects

  • Foxconn’s India expansion plans must account for worker accommodation and food services as production inputs, rather than treating them as peripheral site-management issues.
  • For iPhone production customers, labor unrest adds execution risk to shifting assembly capacity into India, alongside the operational challenges later reported at the site.

Third-order effects

  • If repeated labor disputes persist across major assembly hubs, contract manufacturers’ ability to diversify production will depend as much on workforce infrastructure and labor practices as on factory capacity.
  • The pattern points toward worker conditions becoming a recurring constraint on geographically distributed electronics manufacturing, with protests capable of exposing weaknesses in supplier expansion strategies.

The trend: Electronics manufacturing diversification is making labor conditions and worker-support infrastructure central to the reliability of new production hubs.

No flushing toilets, rats in the kitchen, food that poisoned 250 people, dorms where you share rooms with up to 30 people and sleep on the floor. All things workers pay for from a $140 monthly wage, according to Reuters. https://twitter.com/...

A close look by @Reuters at events before and after a Dec. 17 protest casts a stark light on living and working conditions at a Foxconn plant in south India, where bad food and crowded dorms led to a rare protest that shut down the iPhone-making facility https://www.reuters.com/.…

Also it is basic that workers have clean toilets and good food in the plant at the minimum. They didn't have good dormitories with flush toilets. Foxconn had to do the basics. It didn't

Going by how Foxconn Chennai and Sterlite Thoothukudi, are being sabotaged by Indians at the behest of someone, one thing is now certain Be it 1757, 1807, 1857, 1907, 1947, 1977, 2020, 2057, you can easily find Indians who will betray other Indians, for 10 pieces of silver

Tamil Nadu is the most industrially friendly state in the country. Secondly, when hundreds of workers get food poisoning due to food consumed in the unit, any person would protest. This is not sterlite at all. https://twitter.com/...

Apple needs to immediately send teams in to conduct top-to-toe inspections of all Foxconn plants worldwide, and organise far tighter monitoring, to ensure this can never happen again ... https://twitter.com/...
