This latest abuse underscores exactly what privacy and human rights advocates have long warned: that NSO does not have adequate controls in place to limit how its customers use the powerful tools it sells. https://www.wired.com/...

BREAKING: Apple alerts US 🇺🇸 diplomats to #Pegasus spyware hacking. NSO = in-plain-sight national security threat for years. Embarrassing that it took a private company to warn them. How did we get here? THREAD 1/ Story: @Bing_Chris & @josephmenn https://www.reuters.com/... https…

We've been calling NSO a national security threat for years. This reporting shows - again - why we need to hold NSO accountable for their actions, and why governments need to support increased security online. https://www.reuters.com/...

6/ For years, USG 🇺🇸 progress on mercenary surveillance proliferation seemed slow. Now? Things are changing. Fast ✅Last month: Commerce Dept. blocklisted NSO Group ✅ Yesterday Biden admin announced anti-surveillance-tech initiative. https://twitter.com/...

8/ #Pegasus has been used to steal America's secrets. Are there victims not notified by Apple? How about the overseas-posted personnel using Androids? Does @StateDept know now? A multi-agency investigation is immediately needed.

In general I resent the extent to which regional Mideast conflicts matter in American politics, but it seems like given all the money we spend in the region we should be able to get the Israeli government to shutter this company. https://twitter.com/...

If a Russian company was behind this, Russia would be facing double-sanctions by lunchtime. No, triple-sanctions! Oprah would be handing out sanctions to everyone in the audience. Do you think the US will be sanctioning the host nation for this company? https://www.reuters.com/..…

5/ It gets worse: #Pegasus spyware allows operators to precisely monitor infected phones locations. Operator could have tracked infected US diplomats in near real time! Safety threat to US Embassies, Missions & other activities abroad is crystal clear. https://twitter.com/...

Ow 👀, NSO claimed it wouldn't hack US, +1 country code numbers, but clearly not all oversees diplomats are on such numbers >> EXCLUSIVE U.S. State Department phones hacked with Israeli company spyware ↘️ https://www.reuters.com/...

NSO's technical safeguards have to do with country area codes, e.g. preventing targeting of +1 numbers. But Embassy workers use local numbers. There's no technical safeguard against targeting of Americans (or Brits, etc) in this circumstance.

NSO is amazing in that it gives every random authoritarian government access to remote phone surveillance tech that is roughly on par with what the CIA and NSA have. This is really bad for democracies everywhere.
