Dear world: It is perfectly possible to imagine a radically-decentralized Web and simultaneously disbelieve that basing it on blockchain is necessary or even desirable. But de facto, the term “Web3” now means “buy my cryptocurrency” and is thus polluted, probably beyond repair.

@Techmeme @readmaxread pretty much everything described in that “problems web3 solves for me” post are things that, if they happened, would inarguably be bad things. the good news is most of them are complete bullshit, but still

Web3 is a lot of things for a lot of technical people. It for sure not a viable, usable iteration of the web for common folks yet. A few thoughts on why, what and how. https://ol.amitgawande.com/... https://twitter.com/...

One key reason builders love web3 - it enables degrees of freedom in all direction that just isn't possible otherwise. https://twitter.com/...

The relatively modest number of people who follow me might find it interesting to hear that this touched a nerve; 100s of RTs, 220K impressions and growing fast. So, DWeb-enthusiast/blockchain-skeptic is apparently not an entirely-fringe position. Pleasant surprise. https://twitt…

Imagine learning about an entire industry trend predicated on the idea that the price of Beanie Babies always goes up. Now swap out Beanie Babies with cryptocurrencies and you have web3. https://twitter.com/...

I'll add a note here: it's perfectly possible to build a future of the web better designed to allow people to safely and effectively make money without making the web entirely based around capitalism from top to bottom. https://twitter.com/...

The internet, email, social media has all been promised to be technological solutions to centralization but we've again and again found that centralization is a social phenomenon and requires social solutions. “Network effects” is a euphemism for “enormous tendency to monopoly” h…

What gets me is that we already had a decentralized web, look at email and forums, then all these kids with VC funds centralized it. Now those same people that ruined it say they want to make a new decentralized web... https://twitter.com/...

This makes me sad, because there's a lot more possible in this space, but let's be real, a lot more has always been possible and we end up with whatever makes money for the people in the right place at the right time. https://twitter.com/...

Is web3 bullshit?: Excellent orientation to the basics of the discussion. Also a nice ending: “Why am I in this awful, ugly, unfun casino in the first place?? Is there a way out of the casino??” https://maxread.substack.com/ ... web3 cryptocurrency crypto bullshit t

I think this article is a useful framing of web3/blockchain/w/e: https://maxread.substack.com/ ... especially in outlining the position that I could be right that it's _technically_ bullshit but that the cultural forces behind it could let to it prevailing anyway

“Web3...securitizes everything. Under the web3 regime, every business, every institution, every community, every group, every project is bounded and structured by crypto tokens — ‘shares’ you can sell on decentralized crypto markets.” https://maxread.substack.com/ ...
